Jade chain carving, a jade carving technique that is hard to describe as not beautiful

There are so many precious jade carvings collected in our Palace Museum. Among them, there is a type of jade carving that uses techniques that are said to be the most difficult skills in the jade carving industry! His works are so beautiful and rare to see!

Each type of jade carving technique has different characteristics, and the most surprising one is the chain carving. Is this chain carving technique difficult? Maybe we can understand it by looking at its value!

The above jade chain dragon bottle started at 1.5 million at an auction and was finally sold for 2.5 million. This work mainly uses openwork and chain carving techniques, with every stroke of the knife being finely crafted and every detail being smooth and clean; from a distance the green flowers look like shadows, and up close the jasper looks better than gold.

Chain carving is a technique derived from round carving. Chain carving, also known as chain work, often appears on objects such as stoves, bottles, lamps, towers, incense sticks, pieces, locks, and pendants. Jade chains can be single, double or multiple chains. They are not only an integral part of an artifact, but also a decorative means of the artifact, serving to set off the artifact without overshadowing it.

The difficulty of chain carving lies in the fact that it is made of jade and integrated with the object. It needs to be cut with tools of appropriate hardness and softness, and the "excess flesh" needs to be shaved off. The position of each link must be arranged properly without any error. Let's take a look at this example and you will know how difficult it is~~·~·

When making a chain, you must first choose a place without defects and dirt, arrange the chain, and cut it into a cross shape. The size and thickness of each circle must be consistent.

Then carve out the basic shape, removing as much of the fleshy part as possible, and then use a suitable round nail to carefully chisel out the shape of the inner circle. It should match the outer shape and should not be too thick or too thin.

Finally, use a pointed stick to pick out the succulents that connect the circles. When operating, pay attention to adjusting the angle between the tool and the product to prevent the chain from being damaged by the tool.

Works carved using the chain carving technique often have a stronger sense of three-dimensionality and space, and are unique and ingenious. In the whole process of chain carving, the most critical part is carving the ring.

More and more people have realized the craftsmanship value of chain carving. To some extent, it has shaped a national cultural spirit and is a model of our traditional culture!
