This is not jade, but azure. It is classified as Xiuyan jade, a type of serpentine. The most special thing is that its color is like the blue sky with a hint of green. The closer the color is to the sky, the more expensive the price.

Xiuyu

It is said that the name "Tianqingdong" comes from a poem "Cold Wind and Sunny Day" written by Fang Hui, a poet in the Song Dynasty. The poem says "the white ground is still frozen, the sky is blue and gradually brightens." The artistic conception of the first clear day after a heavy snow fits the Tianqingdong jade very well.

Color Differences

Although both Azure Jade and Blue Water Jade are mainly blue in color, a closer look will reveal that the blue tone of Blue Water Jade is more vivid and bright, while the color of Azure Jade is related to the iron element, so there is some yellow tones in its blue tone.

In addition, the blue color of blue water jade is generally distributed very evenly, but the color will still vary in shades, and the transition between shades is even and soft, and the color roots can still be seen upon close inspection. However, Tianqingdong has no color roots at all.

Hardness Difference

The hardness of azure jade is between 4.5-5.5, while the hardness of blue water jade can reach 7. That is to say, the density of azure jade is also smaller than that of blue water jadeite. Therefore, in the same volume, blue water jadeite is much heavier than azure jadeite. Moreover, the hardness and density of Tianqingjelly are quite low, so it will crack if it is slightly bumped, and its durability is relatively low.

Structural differences

Jade crystals are generally columnar or fibrous, with an interwoven structure, which creates a "jade property" unique to jade. The mineral crystals of azure jelly are small, and directional flaky or fibrous structures can be seen at the ends. The difference in their structures obviously reflects the jadeite nature, which is something that jadeite cannot possess.

Different gloss

Simply put, jadeite has a glassy luster, while the luster of azure is relatively dark, showing an oily or waxy luster, which is caused by the higher density of jadeite.

Different prices

I believe many jade lovers are familiar with the prices of Blue Water Jade and Azure Frost. There is a big price gap between the two. The price of jade is much higher than that of Azure Frost, so Azure Frost is often sold as Blue Water Jade.
