Do you think you bought red jadeite? In fact, I bought a hot brick!

Red jadeite refers to jadeite with red as the main color, which belongs to the jadeite color type. Its color depth varies greatly, including brown-red, bright red, orange-red, yellow-red and other various red jadeite.

There is a saying in the jade industry: "Red, green, and purple jade are the most valuable", which shows the status of red jade among jades.

Chinese people have always loved red, which is a festive and auspicious color and is believed to have the effect of warding off evil and bringing good luck. Red jadeite is favored by the Chinese people for its unique and charming color.

The jadeite raw stone has been rolled and transported to the riverbed for hundreds and thousands of years, and oxidized by contact with air and water. As the degree of oxidation increases, the color deepens from yellow to red. The red color is mainly formed by iron mineral elements entering the gaps between the jadeite crystals.

Red jadeite is mostly the surface part of the jade, also known as "red skin" or "red fog". Most of them are bean-type and opaque, and a few can reach the glutinous or ice type.

Red jadeite of high quality and good color is hard to come by, and the best one is "Cockscomb Red". Its red color is bright and vivid, and the jade is transparent and delicate, making it a favorite of jade collectors.

In order to gain more profits, some jade merchants in the market will use heat treatment methods to change the color of low-quality red jade, yellow jade or brown-yellow jade into a brighter and more vivid reddish brown. This is called "burned red" jade.

"Burning red" does not change its internal structure, nor does it undergo chemical treatment, so burned red jade is still A-grade jade.

However, the heating process will make the texture of jade coarser, reduce its transparency, and reduce its fineness and roundness. Moreover, the color of burned red jadeite is artificially optimized, so its market value is much lower than that of natural red jadeite.

Natural red jadeite

We can identify natural jadeite and burned red jadeite through the following methods.

Color Vibrancy

Natural red jadeite is brown-yellow or brown-red, with rich color variations. The color of burned red jade is too bright and looks unnatural, and the color has no sense of layering.

Color lines

There is an obvious dividing line between the jade color of natural red jadeite and other original colors, while the color of burned red jadeite transitions from the outside to the inside, and the boundary is not clear.

transparency

Natural red jadeite has a higher transparency, which is more evident in the boundary area. There is no significant difference in the transparency of different colors of burned red jadeite. Sometimes the transparency of the red part is even worse.

Surface smoothness

The surface of natural red jadeite is smooth and flat after polishing. However, burned red jadeite will lose some moisture during the heating process, resulting in tiny dry cracks, which reduces its smoothness.

Common red jadeite is mostly dark red or brownish red, and is the first choice for color-matching carvings. It is often used in carvings with individual characteristics or antique imitations.

For those who love red jade, red jadeite is a good choice for wearing and collecting jadeite.
