What You Don’t Know About Jade Processing

What You Don’t Know About Jade Processing

Today's article will briefly introduce the jade processing process, so that you know how a piece of raw stone is transformed into an exquisite collection.

Generally, the processing of jadeite raw stone into finished product requires going through the stages of material selection, cutting, design, rough carving, fine carving, drilling and polishing.

1. Material selection

It is to sort the jadeite raw stones, and determine what products to make according to their characteristics, size, shape and value, so that the materials can achieve the highest economic benefits. If the material is not selected properly, it will cause material waste and economic losses.

2. Cutting

Cutting is a technical job, and a good cutter can make the most of the material.

Some jade gamblers are in a hurry to cut the jade and may cut off the emerald green part of the jade with one cut, making the jade unable to be made into a complete carving artwork, thus reducing the original value of the jade. When cutting jadeite, one should first polish the skin and observe the surface features of the jade before deciding what kind of carving to make with the entire raw material.

3. Design

Jade design is different from general industrial product design. Industrial product design requires design drawings; jade design is to draw design drawings directly on the jade material based on the material.

4. Rough Carving

First, use an oil pen to draw the composition lines on the prototype, grind off the excess parts along the composition lines, and carve out the general shape of the jade. In order to further carry out detailed carving work.

5. Fine Carving

After the jade is roughly carved, the pattern is presented vividly in front of people with personal skills, careful thinking and dexterous hands. In addition, the surface of the pattern must be constantly rinsed with water during the carving process. The purpose is to wash away the powder, while lowering the temperature. It also allows the quality of the product, the fineness and accuracy of the lines to be observed.

6. Drilling

Also known as drilling, especially when carving and hollowing out details, the drilling work must be carefully completed by machine. For the small hole on the top of the jade pendant used to thread the rope, you should pay attention to selecting the appropriate position of the hole and also consider the size of the hole. If the hole is too large, it will affect the appearance, while if it is too small, it will be inconvenient to thread the rope. The author has encountered many cases where the product could not be traded because the hole for threading the rope was too small, or the finished product had to be sent to the factory for enlargement of the hole. The hole should also be drilled at the center of gravity, that is, when the rope is threaded. The object is neither slanted nor tilted. In a few cases, there are also "bull nose holes" (that is, the hole is pierced at an inclined angle from the front or back or left and right directions of the top of the jade pendant, rather than the normal straight through hole).

7. Polishing

The process of removing traces of jade processing surface through certain technological operations so that the surface of jade can achieve its proper gloss and smoothness is called the polishing process of jade products.

This is the entire processing process. A piece of raw stone becomes a treasure in our hands step by step. Of course, there are still many things to pay attention to in the process of jade processing. What should be paid attention to in selecting materials, what should be paid attention to in cutting materials, what should be followed in design, how to carve, and how to polish. Each step requires experienced masters to do it repeatedly to produce fine products. Therefore, when we get a piece of jade, we must cherish it. This is the result of the hard work of the processing master!
