The process from design to finished product of jade carving of dragon and phoenix

Friends who have been exposed to jade carving should all know that the raw materials of jade are all very large pieces, and then they are slowly cut into small pieces and then designed. This piece of raw stone looks like this.

Slightly remove the large edges and corners, and some dirty and cracked areas should be removed directly, otherwise it will affect the overall effect of the carving. After a little polishing with tools, we start drawing the draft.

Drawing

Back design

When drawing a design, people usually make a draft with a pencil first, and then use a liner pen to draw a detailed and accurate draft on the jade. The pens and inks we use here must be waterproof, because water is needed during the jade carving process, otherwise it will be unclear and impossible to carve after being flushed with water. So we should pay special attention to this point.

It takes a long time of repeated carving and polishing to carve to this stage. After the first large-scale work is completed, the previous drawings are basically invisible, and it is necessary to re-draw the drafts of the details, and then change to smaller tools to carve. When carving details, you must be patient. As the saying goes, slow work produces fine work. This place definitely uses slow work and repeated polishing to produce such jade carvings.

Polishing finish

After the carving is completed, the last step is polishing, which is actually very simple. Use tools of different mesh sizes to continuously polish the jade pieces. But there are also some tips to pay attention to.

1: When polishing details, be sure to be gentle. If you use a machine to polish, the speed should be lowered, otherwise it is easy to damage the details.

2: Do not add too much water when sanding, otherwise it will be difficult to see the extent of the sanding. You need to sand and wipe dry to see the effect.

The picture above shows the work after polishing and grinding. It looks much brighter and more beautiful than the work just carved.

Because this is a small ornament, it needs to be paired with a base.

As the saying goes, a good horse deserves a good saddle. We can't just use any base for this one. The base we chose is a rosewood carving base. The base also has some carvings, which can better echo the main work and play a icing on the cake effect.
