What determines the value of jade?

What determines the value of jade?

How to identify genuine jadeite?

Answer: As the jade market heats up, counterfeiters are becoming more and more sophisticated. It is very difficult to distinguish the quality of jade products with the naked eye and experience alone. For accurate identification, it is necessary to resort to scientific and technological means and advanced techniques, such as Charles filters, high-power magnifying glasses, density and thermal conductivity measurements, infrared spectroscopy Raman tests, etc.

What determines the value of jade?

Answer: As the saying goes, "Gold has a price but jade is priceless." Ordinary consumers do not dare to buy jade products they like due to their lack of knowledge about jade. Some unscrupulous businessmen take this opportunity to drive up the price of jade, resulting in a mixed jade market. However, we believe that jade is not only valuable, but its value is also based on evidence.

Type (4 levels in total)

The type refers to the texture of jade, and is also the most basic description of a jade product. The old type, new type, glass type, ice type, egg white type, bean type, oily green type, blue flower, blue water, clear water, etc. mentioned in the market are all customary commercial names, but because these commercial names do not have a clear definition in the standards, they cannot be used as our grading standards.

In fact, the crystal particle size of jade and the relationship between these particles are the main reasons for determining the commercial variety of jade, and the following grading standards are formulated based on this:

Level and classification standards

Level 1 has a fine and dense structure. No mineral particles or complex primary cracks can be seen under a 10x magnifying glass. The particle size is less than 0.1mm.

Level 2 has a dense structure. Under a 10x magnifying glass, mineral particles and very few fine composite primary cracks can be seen. The particle size is 0.1~1mm

The third-level structure is not dense enough. Under a 10x magnifying glass, mineral particles and local fine composite primary cracks can be seen. The particle size is 1~3mm

Level 4 has loose structure and large particle size difference, with particle size above 3mm

Water (5 levels)

"Water" is an important factor in jadeite evaluation, commonly known as "water head" in the industry. Jadeite with high transparency has sufficient water head. Such jadeite appears crystal clear and gives people a watery feeling, while jadeite with poor transparency is dry and dull, giving people a dry feeling, that is, jadeite with poor water head and insufficient water. The transparency of jadeite can be roughly divided into transparent, relatively transparent, translucent, slightly transparent, and opaque. The more transparent the jadeite is, the higher its value:

Level transparency Sunlight transparent progress Common commercial varieties

Grade 1 transparent 10mm or more pure colorless old glass floor

Level 2 is relatively transparent, 6~10mm, a small amount of old glass, special grade

Level 3 translucent 3~6mm old glass ground, ice type premium product

Level 4, slightly transparent, 1~3mm, rich in color, coarse in grain, new and old varieties

Level 5: opaque, sunlight cannot penetrate, dark color, poor background, new species

Bottom (4 levels)

The base refers to the amount of jade flocs (also known as cotton), black spots, and other color spots. Since jade is an aggregate of various minerals, its structure is mostly fibrous and granular, and the amount of impurities will inevitably affect the value of jade.

Level classification standard

Under a 10x magnifying glass, no cracks or gray-black threads can be seen. Occasionally there are some white cotton and small black spots in inconspicuous places.

No cracks can be seen under a 10x magnifying glass, but a small amount of fine white cotton, black spots, and gray-black silk can be seen.

Level 3: No cracks can be seen with the naked eye, a small amount of cracks can be seen under a 10x magnifying glass, a small amount of white cotton, black spots and a small amount of ice residue can be seen with the naked eye

Level 4: A small amount of cracks and a lot of white cotton, black spots, gray silk and ice residue can be seen with the naked eye

Color (6 levels in total)

Common colors of jade include green, white, red, purple, yellow, etc. Among them, the green one is the best variety. If a piece of jade has green, red and violet, it is also a very rare jade.

For green jadeite (such as ring faces), there are traditional sayings of "thick", "positive", "yang" and "harmonious". The so-called "rich" means that the green is full and heavy; "positive" means that the green is pure and does not contain any impurities; "yang" means that the green is bright and vivid; and "harmonious" means that the green is uniform and soft.

The color grading of jadeite under a continuous light source with a color temperature of 5000K is:

Grade Purity Uniformity Degree of depth Color

Level 1 Pure green, emerald, emerald green, etc. are extremely uniform, not thick, not light, bright and beautiful

Level 2: Pure green, apple green, yellow seedling green, etc. are uniform with thick stripes on the whole, and the patches and spots are not thick or light, bright and beautiful.

Level 3: Pure green, apple green, yellow seedling green, etc. The overall unevenness varies in shades and is bright and lush.

Level 4: Slightly bluish green (bright red and violet with yellowish green) Even, not thick, not light, moist and bright

Level 5: Even blue-green, not too thick, not too light, bright and smooth

Level 6 gray-blue (including light yellow-green, light red, and light violet) Uniform, elegant, and bright

Worker (4 levels)

In this grading standard, "workmanship" refers to the shape, workmanship, and weight of a finished jade product. It should be pointed out that due to the differences in designers, craftsmanship, cultural connotations, production years, volume, etc. of jade products, each piece has its own characteristics, and detailed grading is impossible. Some websites are divided like this:

Level Shape Workmanship Weight

Level 1: Suitable proportions, full and generous, made by famous masters, exquisite workmanship, more than 5 carats

Level 2: Suitable proportions, full and generous, natural and smooth, unique in craftsmanship, more than 5 carats

Level 3: Suitable proportions, full and generous, ordinary production, smooth and flat, more than 5 carats

Level 4 ratio is suitable for production and generally has no requirements
