Traditional methods of identifying jadeite

Traditional methods of identifying jadeite

The traditional method of identifying jade is mainly based on visual observation, based on the accumulation of jade knowledge and practical experience of looking at and touching it more. In summary, it is "one look, two touch, three feel, four listen".

Look means to look at the characteristics of jade, its structure and color, and check whether there are any defects. The authenticity of jadeite can be judged by observing its luster. For example, jadeite usually has glass, sub-glass, and semi-glass luster, but the color distribution is uneven. On the other hand, Hetian jade and Xiuyan jade mostly have waxy luster and oily luster, and the color is mostly uniform.

Touch: Jade transfers and dissipates heat quickly, so when you put jade on your face or on the back of your hand, it will feel cool. Jade has high hardness and a dense and fine structure. After polishing, it has a very high surface gloss and feels smooth and delicate to the touch. You will be able to feel it if you touch it more and for a long time.

Weigh: The density of jadeite is 3.30-3.36/cubic centimeter, which is higher than Hetian jade, Xiuyan jade, Dushan jade, etc., but lower than grossular garnet. Because of its high hardness, it cannot be scratched by an ordinary knife. If you use jade to scratch glass, it will leave scratches on the glass. With more contact and experience, you can feel it by touching it with your hand.

Listen: You can also judge the authenticity of jade products by carefully listening to the sound of collision between them. Natural jade, especially jade of good quality, will make a very crisp and pleasant sound when struck. Of course, the strength of this impact requires a certain level of experience. Only by knowing the sound of jade impact can you tell whether it is jade based on experience. Another key point is that if you have no experience, never try to strike the jewelry yourself at a jewelry counter, unless you plan to break it and buy it yourself. I think many people have heard about the incident last year where a tourist accidentally broke a jadeite worth 300,000 yuan in a shop while traveling in Yunnan.

Look, touch, weigh and listen are just the methods to distinguish ordinary jadeite.

The entry-level steps to determine whether jade is real or fake. Later, I will share what is the water head, jade quality, fog, python belt, cracks, A-grade, B-grade, C-grade, etc. of jade.
