In October 1996, thanks to the construction of a school in Qingzhou, Shandong, more than 400 national treasures of Buddha statues that had been buried deep underground for thousands of years were able to reappear in the world! Most of these Buddha statues were carved during the Northern Wei, Eastern Wei and Northern Qi dynasties, and the features of the statues vary depending on the era. We can see not only the "wide robes and belts, slender bones and clear figures" of the Northern Wei Dynasty, but also the "Cao robes emerging from water" of the Northern Qi Dynasty. But the most shocking thing is the unique and beautiful smile on each Buddha statue! Even those who don't know much about Buddhism can deeply feel the tranquility and kindness of the Buddha statue. And today, what we are going to do is to use jade to replicate this oriental smile that has lasted for thousands of years! The jadeite in the picture above is the raw material for this reproduction. The naked eye can see that its texture is delicate and pure, with almost no obvious impurities, making it perfect for carving sacred Buddha statues. The prototype of the replica is the Northern Qi Dynasty gold-plated and painted stone sculpture of Bodhisattva in the picture above. It is the best-preserved Buddha statue among the more than 400 unearthed ones, with only a small part of the left index finger missing. Even after thousands of years, it still retains its bright color. Compared with the solemn Buddha statues that are commonly seen, the Buddha statues in Qingzhou are somewhat "deviant". Its opening can be said to have overturned all previous conventional operations. It is no longer solemn and pure, but tranquil and kind. That smile, which looks sweet from any angle, is a great test for the jade carver. Precisely because the carving is extremely difficult, in order to ensure a smooth carving process, the jade carver made two models with plaster and water foam before he dared to start work. Using techniques such as round carving, the high cheekbones and nose tip as well as the relaxed, friendly, quiet and mysterious smile are carefully carved out, showing the majestic, relaxed and comfortable charm of the Buddha statue to the fullest! After a long process, the finished product is finally completed. That oriental smile that has lasted for thousands of years has really been reproduced! Under natural light, it presents a sense of deep tranquility, which makes people feel calm, comforted and happy unconsciously. I wonder what the friends in front of the screen think?
