When visiting the gemstone market, careful friends will find that the color, intensity and position of lights in different counters are different. Why is that? Could it be that imperceptible display lighting can deceive the consumer's eye and make the gemstone more beautiful?

When observing gemstones such as sapphires or rubies, should we choose warm or cold light sources? What kind of light source should be used when observing jade? When buying a jade flashlight, should you choose warm light or cold light? Do different light sources have an impact on the fire of gemstones? In fact, the different color temperatures and tones of the light in the display cabinet may cause the colors of the jewelry and jade to look very different. For gems of different textures and tones, merchants will carefully match different display light sources to make the products look more beautiful.

When we observe the color of gemstones, under normal conditions, we should choose to observe in a sunny day with natural sunlight, not in direct sunlight. If other light sources are added, the color will deviate. For example, yellow light can enhance the color of ruby, making it appear redder; under incandescent light, ruby ​​appears bluish and has a color cast. On the contrary, sapphires appear bluer under incandescent light, but no one looks at sapphires under yellow light. The fire of rubies and sapphires will be better when they are directly illuminated by various light sources.

Take jade as an example. Many times, the lights carefully arranged by the store will make the jade look extra translucent and lustrous, and even change the hue, making some gray or blue jade appear completely different under natural light.


Color is one of the most important evaluation criteria for jadeite. People often say "a one-level color difference means a ten-fold price difference." In fact, different colored light sources can also affect the texture of jadeite when observed with the naked eye. Then let's take a look at how jadeite with three more prominent color changes "changes color" and "mutates".

1. Violet: Yellow light is pink, white light is gray

Violet jade is sensitive to light and will produce different purple colors under different light sources. It appears pink-purple under light with a yellowish hue, and bluish-purple under white light. The color will be blue or gray.


2. Qingshui jade cannot stand strong light

"Qingshui Green" refers to the light and uniform green color that appears in the entire jade product. The green color will be more obvious and uniform and light under relatively dim light, but it will be much lighter or almost colorless under strong light or natural light.


3. Bean-colored bean-colored soft light is the most beautiful

Due to the coarse crystal grains of bean-type jadeite, when observed under natural light, the green distribution is often very uneven, in the form of dots or clumps, the white cotton wool is also more prominent, and the granularity is more obvious. However, under light that is softer than natural light, the green will appear brighter and more uniform, the cotton wool will not be prominent, and the granularity will not be obvious.


Because the color of jadeite changes differently under different light sources, the best light source for appreciating it is warm yellow light. The green color will be more attractive and the purple will be particularly bright. Jadeite with blue or gray tones will appear more "yang" and "rich" under yellow light. Therefore, counters selling jade are generally equipped with yellow-toned light sources. When purchasing, consumers are advised to ask for a display cabinet to be taken out and observe the color of the jade under natural light from outdoors or by the window, which will make it appear more realistic. The best time is around 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Every time I go to the jadeite raw stone market, I always see many experts holding a high-intensity flashlight and studying the stones in their hands from top to bottom and left to right. What is so particular about the light of this flashlight?


Generally speaking, when looking at jadeite raw stones with a strong flashlight, you should focus on these two points:

1. Look at the cracks


There will be a light-blocking effect in places with cracks, but you cannot use light that is too bright, as that light will penetrate the cracks and let in light, affecting the observation of the light-blocking effect. The transmittance can be used to determine the depth of cracks and cotton.

2. Look at the structure

Using lighting at an angle of 60-70 degrees can make it easier to see the structure of the jade. Based on the structure, you can determine what kind of jade material it is, whether it is natural or has been optimized.

When you shine a flashlight directly on the jade and then slowly move it horizontally, you can determine whether the texture and structure of the jade are uniform. If the light transmittance of jade is uniform, it means the structure is uniform; if the light transmittance is uneven, it means the structure is not uniform.

When we are identifying the grain size of jadeite, we might as well try observing it from the side with a strong flashlight at a 45° angle.

Therefore, what happened to Ms. Zhang was because she underestimated the role of light. When choosing jewelry and jade, ordinary consumers must pay attention to the differences in the environment. If they are not sure, they can change several light sources at the same time to observe the differences. They should also observe the backlight because the color of the gemstone is often uneven.
