It turns out that Ruyi was originally used to scratch an itch!

The first time I heard the word "Ruyi" was when I was a child, when I watched Journey to the West and saw that Sun Wukong had a Ruyi golden cudgel in his hand, which could be big or small, and he could do whatever he wanted. When I heard it again, it became what the snake spirit said in the cartoon “Calabash Brothers”: As you wish, as I wish. This shows that Ruyi is truly a magical tool for fulfilling wishes.

In fact, Ruyi has many shapes and rich materials. The most famous of these is the Jade Ruyi. According to relevant records, jade ruyi has existed as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, it had become one of the treasures of the palace. The shape of the jadeite Ruyi is made up of cloud patterns and Ganoderma lucidum on the head connected to a long handle. So today, I will talk about Jade Ruyi.

1. The origin of jade Ruyi.

Ruyi, as it was first evolved from the ancient hu and scratching stick, was used by people at that time to scratch the itchy places that their hands could not reach, and it worked as people wished, hence the name "Ruyi". In ancient times, Ruyi had a wide range of uses. It could be used as a self-defense device and was also used as a command flag in war. It symbolized success and good luck. As a lucky object, Ruyi is widely used among the people and in the royal court.

Generally, before relatives or friends go on a long journey, family members or friends will give them Ruyi to express good wishes. In the Qing Dynasty, Ruyi was used more widely in the palace. Generally, the emperor would have his etiquette minister present Ruyi at his enthronement ceremony to symbolize good wishes for the future and to wish the new policies to go smoothly. Ruyi is also given as a present to foreign guests attending the conference to express the desire for friendly relations between the two countries. It can be seen that the small Ruyi is a precious item that combines folk exchanges, court etiquette, and display and appreciation.

2. Jade Ruyi has exquisite carvings and rich shapes.

Jade Ruyi is a more special product among jade carvings. Up to now, the carving and modeling of jade ruyi have been further developed. Jadeite Jun first introduces three types:

1. Dragon and Phoenix

There are dragons, phoenixes and auspicious clouds on the carvings. In ancient times, the dragon represented the totem tribe of scaly animals, and the phoenix represented the totem tribe of birds. Originally, the two tribes were fighting each other all year round. Later, because the Dragon Tribe defeated the Phoenix Tribe, the two tribes merged. After that, the world was peaceful and the harvest was abundant. Nowadays, we call the union of a man and a woman a dragon and a phoenix, which means a happy marriage for a hundred years, and it is often used as a gift to the newlyweds.

2. Welcome good fortune

The carving shows a scene of a boy catching a bat. "Na" means acceptance and harvest. The picture shows that blessings are grasped firmly. It also indicates that good luck will come to you, and your family will be happy and harmonious.

3. Flowing Clouds and Hundred Blessings

It is an auspicious pattern composed of cloud patterns and bats. Most of the cloud patterns are shaped like a ruyi, which appears to be endless. It means continuous blessings and long-lasting good fortune. The bat is named after its pronunciation which means "blessings everywhere", symbolizing happiness, fulfillment and endless blessings.

3. Jade Ruyi has different shapes and meanings!

Jade Ruyi of different shapes have different meanings, and each Ruyi has its own unique characteristics. People wear jade ruyi not only because it can show their status and make them look beautiful, but there is a more important reason, that is, it is full of concise and true meanings, which are beautiful and profound, indicating that the person who wears it will be successful and have good luck. The jade ruyi has a simple design and ingenious conception. It can be said to be a fine product for yourself to wear or to give as a gift!

Ambitious fish in the river gather there to try to jump over the Longmen. Anyone who can pass it can ascend to heaven and become a dragon. It implies that the examinees will be able to rise to great heights and prosper like a fish leaping over the dragon gate.

It means that the Eight Immortals cross the sea and each shows their magical powers. The Eight Immortals are Zhang Guolao, Lü Dongbin, Han Xiangzi, Cao Guojiu, Li Tieguai, Han Zhongli, He Xiangu and Lan Caihe.

9. Hehe Ruyi

Carved with jade mirrors, lotus, Ganoderma lucidum, or lily and evergreen. It means that the newlyweds live in harmony, have pure and loyal love, and live together forever.

10. Continuous birth of a son

The carving shows a child sitting cross-legged among lotus flowers. Lotus seeds are used to express the idea of continuity, implying a prosperous family with many children and grandchildren.

11. Heavenly maiden scatters flowers

The picture shows a fairy holding a basket of flowers and scattering flowers. According to the Buddhist scriptures, a beautiful goddess scattered lotus flowers on the Bodhisattvas. The scene was very beautiful and spectacular, which was the grand occasion of the Western Paradise. There was also a time when the Buddha was preaching and Mantuo flowers fell from the sky.

As an ancient traditional jade carving, Jade Ruyi has strong vitality. Unlike jade hairpins and feather tubes which are limited by the times, jade ruyi has been sought after by modern people and even exudes a new breath of life. Many jade carving masters have innovated the form of Ruyi and created a large number of jade Ruyi with the characteristics of the times. I believe that jade Ruyi will continue to shine!
