When buying jade rings, you must know the pitfalls

Throughout the ages, rings have been considered as tokens of love and also represent power.

People in China have been wearing rings since about 4,000 years ago.

By the Qin and Han dynasties, it had become common for women to wear rings. Later, in the Eastern Han Dynasty, people had already used rings as tokens of love, and young men and women often expressed their love by giving each other rings.

In the Tang Dynasty, rings became more popular as tokens of love and one of the important betrothal gifts between men and women in love, and this practice has continued to this day.

So, how much do you know about jade rings? Did you know that there are pitfalls waiting for you when purchasing a jade ring? How can we avoid these pitfalls? Brother Xuan will now take you through it in detail:

Jade rings have long been popular in my country. Whether women wear them to make them look as gentle as jade, or men wear them to make them look noble and dignified, the value of jade rings is always recognized.

When choosing themes for jade rings, most people choose patterns with auspicious meanings, such as gourds, auspicious clouds and other elements with beautiful meanings. However, recently some Western elements are also added, and the themes tend to be realistic. Depicting people and animals are all good themes.

Jade rings can be roughly divided into two categories based on their shapes: inlaid and plain. The main shapes of inlaid jade rings are: egg-shaped, saddle, marquise, teardrop, heart-shaped, rectangular, nostalgic, casual, irregular and so on. Among them, the egg-shaped jade ring attracts the most attention and love.

A plain jade ring is one that is entirely cut and polished from jade and can be worn directly on the finger without the need for a ring setting. Plain jade is generally much more expensive than jade of the same quality because of its larger size.

Such a beautiful and popular jade ring is naturally targeted by unscrupulous merchants. What pitfalls should you pay attention to when purchasing a jade ring?

1. Bottom

The padding refers to the ring face of the jade ring inlaid with a copper base. The copper base will be removed after the transaction, and when it is re-inlaid, the padding will be used together with the base to make the ring face achieve the best effect, which is an acceptable optimization.

Usually, merchants usually make some changes to the copper tray. There are two kinds of copper trays, white and yellow. There will be a hole in the middle to let light in, and white or yellow tin foil is usually placed on it to improve the color. When the jade ring face is dark and dull in color, white tin foil is usually placed under it to brighten the overall tone. When the green jade ring face is lighter blue-gray, yellow tin foil is usually placed under it to make the green color of the jade look brighter and more sunny.

White ring faces basically do not have a backing. If they do, they will not be translucent and their luster will appear dull. Most of the green and purple ring faces have a base, and some improvements or counterfeiting methods use this base as an excuse to make a fuss.

2. Color the bottom

The real method of counterfeiting is the bottom coloring that Brother Xuan will talk about next. This treatment method is to apply a layer of green film on the bottom of the ring face of light green jade or dark jade to make the color of the jade look more high-end. Such a film can usually be wiped off with alcohol. Compared with the base, this method has a more obvious impact on the color and is more likely to affect our judgment.

However, such treatment will cause a large difference in the color of the side and front of the ring face. Therefore, when we buy jade ring faces, if we see that the colors in these two directions are obviously inconsistent, we must pay attention to it. It is very likely that the bottom has been painted.

3. Glossy powder dyeing and wax coating

?Luster powder dyeing and colored wax are also a means of counterfeiting the ring faces of jadeite rings. ?Lustrous powder dyeing is the process of dyeing the surface of some light purple or light green rings with chemical reagents such as chromium oxide and manganese oxide to make the fake look real. The surface color of jade rings treated in this way is generally uniform, but if you zoom in, you will see that the dye is distributed on the surface along the gaps between the particles, and the color is very unnatural compared to natural ones.

The surface wax is just as its name suggests. The way to identify it is that the waxed area will appear duller. If you zoom in on its surface, the scratches will be very obvious and can be distinguished by scraping them off with your fingers.
