Buddhist themes have always been one of the largest and most common themes in jade carvings. Almost every jade lover has bought this kind of jade carvings to a greater or lesser extent, whether it be a laughing Buddha, or the ethereal Guanyin, or the solemn and majestic Buddha, or the innocent and cute baby Buddha... In short, there are so many Buddhist jade carvings that they can make people sick of them. But when it comes to questions like the connotation and particularities of Buddhist jade carvings, I'm afraid many people are at a loss. They can only say things like "keep safe", "looks good", "men wear Guanyin and women wear Buddha" , etc. So what kind of connotation does the Buddhist statue contain, and how should we appreciate it? 1. Culture In a broad sense, Buddhism is a religion, including scriptures, customs, rituals, etc.; in a narrow sense, it is verbal teachings, and the fixed term in Buddhism is called Dharma. So in general, Buddhism is the teachings of the Buddha that guide people to stop doing evil, promote good, and purify their minds. It is the education of the Buddha. The biggest feature of Buddhism is that it is like religion but not religion, like philosophy but not philosophy, and scientific but not science. 2. Shen Yun Buddhist works, no matter where they are based, are worshipped and revered by believers. Therefore, the Buddha statues in jade carvings are particularly particular about spirit. Different Buddha statues have different expressions, some majestic, some kind, some peaceful, some graceful. With such a belief, people with different hearts can also see different spirits. The most common expression is smile. Smiling is a typical feature of Chinese Buddhist statues. Throughout the history of world art, no other art is as devoted to expressing smiles, yet so brilliant, as Chinese Buddhist statues. Why did Buddha laugh? "The Sutra of Everywhere" says: There are three reasons why Buddha does not wear shoes. One is to make the practitioner less greedy; two is to show the wheel of feet; three is to make people happy when seeing it. When the Buddha smiled, five colored lights came out of his mouth. There are five reasons for this: First, I want people to ask questions because what they ask is helpful. When Buddha smiles, he attracts the attention of all beings around him. Because of curiosity, everyone will ask questions proactively, and it is because asking questions that the Buddha preaches to sentient beings and it is for the benefit of sentient beings. Second, he was afraid that people would say that Buddha did not know how to laugh. In order to prevent sentient beings from mistakenly thinking that the Buddha had lost the ability to smile happily and thus creating bad karma, the Buddha smiled. The third is to reveal the light in the mouth. Because of the smile, all living beings know that light comes from the Buddha’s mouth, and they have the opportunity to witness and experience the Buddha’s greatness. Fourth, laugh at those who are not sincere. In the ten directions and three times, the Buddhas and the Bodhisattvas have been blessing you for a long time. 7. The right arm of the duck is full of phoenix lights. Fifth, laughing at the Arhats for keeping to emptiness and not being able to attain the Bodhisattva path. Because the Arhats are attached to the emptiness of persons, they fall into the view of emptiness. They did not know that there was also the Bodhisattva Path, the only Buddha vehicle, and therefore the Buddha smiled. The jade Buddha statue can be said to be the most beautiful smile in the East. Picking up a flower and smiling can wash away all the worries in the world. 3. Temperament As the saying goes, "A prime minister's stomach can hold a boat", and the Buddha's stomach can accommodate all living beings. To moderate evil and turn it into good, and to make good even better, to listen to the confessions and prayers of all believers, to tolerate the beauty and ugliness of the world with the greatest magnanimity, and to gradually change the believers. 4. Combination of materials and themes In order to complete a fine work, one must consider the issues from multiple angles. The biggest one is the integration of materials and subject matter, which also tests the jade carver's integration capabilities. Most jade Buddha statues have a solemn and harmonious beauty, embodying people's beautiful wishes and giving people a sense of transcendence, tranquility and harmony. One should maintain a rigorous and pious attitude towards Buddha statues, not only when creating them but also when wearing them. The Buddha is in the jade, and even more in the heart.
