Teach you how to easily identify jade "A goods"

When buying jadeite in the market, for beginners in the jadeite industry, the first thing to do is to check whether the jadeite is genuine, then look at the color, and finally the value. A beautiful jade bracelet and pendant with a high price, but is it real or fake? Let us introduce how to easily identify genuine jadeite.

1. Jadeite

It is called fly wings in the jargon, and is caused by the crystals of jadeite or other pyroxene minerals having two sets of complete cleavages. Because the cleavage surface is flat and smooth, it can produce mirror reflection of light, and many sparkling small faces can be seen under the light, like fly wings.

Through the size and shape of this shiny surface, we can understand the size and morphological characteristics of the jadeite particles that make up jade, and jadeite is a unique characteristic of jade, which can be used to distinguish it from other similar jades and imitations.

The jadeite is very obvious on the sawn or unpolished surface of jadeite. According to its size and shape, the jadeite is divided into three types:

Snowflake: A more pronounced "flake" shiny surface, usually caused by coarse-grained, short columnar mineral particles.

Fly wings: small, narrow, shiny surfaces formed by medium-coarse columnar to long columnar mineral particles.

Sand stars: small, point-like, shiny surfaces formed by medium-fine-grained, long columnar or fibrous mineral particles.

After jadeite has undergone processes such as polishing and waxing, its jadeite properties are difficult to see, especially the sand star-shaped jadeite properties are more difficult to observe.

On the surface, when the snowflake-like cleavage surface is not polished thoroughly, it can form a slightly concave surface with many small pits, clear boundaries with the surrounding area, and consistent reflection can still be seen in a certain direction. If further polished, it will form an orange peel-like surface.

2. Orange peel effect

The polished surface of jadeite is often uneven like orange peel. The fundamental reason for this phenomenon lies in the properties and structure of the jadeite crystals that make up jadeite. The arrangement direction of jadeite particles in jade is inconsistent (even if there is a certain directionality, they are not parallel one by one), resulting in inconsistent directions of the mineral particles exposed on the surface, presenting cylindrical parallel surfaces, some of which are oblique and some are vertical.

In terms of hardness, the particles exposed on the perpendicular cylindrical surface have the greatest hardness, the particles exposed on the parallel cylindrical surface have the smallest hardness, and the particles exposed on the oblique cylindrical surface are in between. When polished using conventional polishing techniques, the softer particles are more abraded, resulting in a concave surface. The characteristics of jadeite structure can be identified based on the size and shape of the concave surface.

Observation and identification of jadeite surface features is an important method to distinguish jadeite (B-grade), and can also be used to distinguish similar jades from counterfeits.

Due to the nature of jadeite's structure, the smaller the mineral particles that make up jadeite and the more tightly they are combined, the less obvious the orange peel effect will be. When the orange peel effect is obvious, it can be seen by observing the reflected light from the polished surface of the jadeite with the naked eye under soft light. In general, a ten-fold magnifying glass or microscope is required to observe the reflective part of the polished surface.
