Identification skills of genuine jadeite

Identification skills of genuine jadeite

Visual

1) Check the color of natural jadeite and its "evil" (natural and dyed) The color of natural jadeite has color roots, the color is visible, and the distribution is uneven; the color of dyed jadeite is diffuse, invisible, floating, and distributed on the surface in a silk screen pattern.

2) Look at the transparency (water quality). The transparency of natural jade is uneven, and the boundary between transparent and opaque parts is clear;

3) Look at the surface gloss, smoothness and finish. Natural jade has bright gloss and a smooth and round surface. B-grade and coated jade have rough surfaces and weak gloss. Hetian jade (white jade) has an oily luster.

4) Check the internal cleanliness. A-grade goods have a small amount of impurities, especially dirty spots and yellowish-brown oxidized rust (secondary color). B-grade and BC-grade goods are clean inside, and generally do not have oxidized rust.

5) Look at the jadeite texture, which is the intuitive expression of the size of jadeite mineral grains and their mutual combination relationship in jadeite. A. Fly wings (jade and counterfeit varieties). When jade is observed under reflected light, the cleavage surface of the jadeite mineral that can be seen with the rough surface underneath is the reflection of the "fly wing". On a smooth surface, through the illumination of a spotlight, you can also see the "fly wings" B. The "orange peel effect" is that when natural jade is observed through reflection on the polished surface, it will show bumps and depressions of different sizes and directions - the orange peel effect. The boundaries between the ridges and valleys of A-grade jadeite are gradually and smoothly transitioned, while the boundaries between the ridges and valleys of B-grade jadeite are separated by acid-etched cracks. The orange peel effect will not appear in the quartzite jade and Xiuyan jade that imitate jadeite. C. Structure - Flocs. When illuminated by side light or bottom light, the internal structure of jadeite shows a cotton-like substance, also called "cotton". The "flocs" of A-grade jadeite are in the form of long interwoven strips and are relatively delicate. The "flocs" of B-grade jadeite are relatively coarse and have a loose structure. The "flocs" of water-foam or quartzite jade show large features such as sugar granules.

6) Look at the craftsmanship. A-grade products are finely crafted and well polished, while B-grade and BC-grade products are poorly crafted and poorly polished.

Feel (weighing and touching)

Weighing: It has a high specific gravity and feels heavy. Xiuyu, Dushan jade, dyed quartzite, and water jade feel lighter.

Rub with your hands: A-grade jade is relatively smooth, B-grade jade is relatively rough, and coated jade feels sticky; jade feels cool to the touch, while glass feels warm

Ear feel

When A-grade jade is knocked, it makes a crisp sound, like a metallic sound, and the bracelet will echo. When B-grade jade or other jades are knocked, they make a dull sound, and the bracelet will not echo. The above methods are all methods summed up by predecessors based on experience. In fact, the accuracy rate is very high. The most accurate method still requires the use of instruments for scientific identification. (Identified based on the structure, physical characteristics and chemical composition of jadeite)

Identification criteria

Color, transparency, uniformity, shape, and sound are the methods that most people use to appreciate or evaluate jade, and they divide jade into: glass type, dark old pit, old pit, gold wire, oil clear, bean green, flower green, melon green, etc.

Among them, glass-type jade is the best quality, and the one with extremely high "water content" and good transparency is called "ice type", which can be said to be a treasure among the "glass types".

Most consumers who buy jade bracelets may have had this experience: the merchant will knock the jade bracelet in front of you to listen to whether the sound is crisp and clear, and the crisp, melodious and echoing ones are the best. This is done to prove that the jade has dense crystals, good texture and no cracks.
