We all know that jade has very rich colors. It can appear in so many colors because of different color causes. According to the different color causes, the color of jade can be divided into primary colors (green, purple, black, etc.) and secondary colors (red, yellow, etc.).

What is primary color?

The primary color refers to the color of jadeite that is not disturbed by external factors during its formation process and is completely caused by color-causing ions. For example, green jade is due to the presence of chromium and iron elements during the "growth" process of jade. Chromium and iron are the reasons why jade appears green.

What is secondary color?

Secondary color refers to the color that jadeite is caused by being stained by foreign colored substances after it is formed. For example, red jadeite appears red because the iron ions in the earth's crust enter the gaps between the crystals of the jadeite raw stone. After long-term weathering, an oxidation reaction occurs, which reveals the color.

The cause of the formation of red jadeite's secondary color

Because the red color of red jadeite is formed later, its red color is generally lighter and mostly exists only in the form of jadeite surface.

Most of the red jadeite currently on the market has undergone heat treatment, and the heat-treated red jadeite is also recognized by experts and the market. So why is heat treatment, an optimization method, so suitable for red jadeite?

This may be related to the fact that the color of red jadeite is a secondary color. Because the color of natural red jade is mostly dark, after the jade is formed, the iron element enters the interior of the red jade and an oxidation reaction occurs to form hematite. Heat treatment can promote the oxidation reaction of hematite, thereby turning dark tones into bright and vivid colors.

The color of natural red jadeite is darker

The heat treatment of red jadeite falls under the category of physical treatment, because its color is changed only by heating, without adding any chemical substances or taking any chemical reactions. Therefore, the heat-treated red jadeite can currently be issued with an appraisal certificate, and the heat-treated red jadeite will be marked as A-grade on the appraisal certificate.

Certificate of identification of red jadeite after heat treatment

Sometimes we will also see in some red jadeite certificates, the note in the remarks column: The cause of the red color can be confirmed. What does this sentence mean? It means that there is no way to determine whether it is "artificially burned" or "naturally burned". "Natural burning" means that the surface of the jadeite raw stone is formed red jadeite due to being roasted by mountain fire. "Artificial firing" is what we call heat treatment. In short, this thing has been "burned".
