Why can’t jade be graded according to the 4Cs?

Today, the 4C standard has been widely used in diamond quality certification processes around the world. But, why doesn’t jade have its own specific grade classification like the 4C grading of diamonds so far?

Many experts in the industry can identify the texture of jade, and have derived jargons such as "experts look at the type, laymen look at the color", "36 waters, 72 colors, and 108 grounds". There is also a series of practices for grading jade based on the type, water, color, and quality of jade, referring to the 4C grading standard. But no matter how it is classified, it will inevitably involve sculpture art and cultural connotations, which only have broad interpretations and their value is difficult to quantify specifically.

It is impossible to quantify the value of mid- to high-end jade carvings with specific prices. Some people disagree with this and believe that ordinary glass can also be carved into works of art with cultural connotations. This is a wrong statement that confuses two cultural tastes. Jade culture, as the inheritance and continuation of traditional Chinese jade culture, has a long history. Its value is related to its jade quality and cultural connotations. Glass is artificially synthesized and has no rarity. It relies on molds to make unlimited copies of the same product in order to earn huge profits. There is no comparison at all.

Every piece of jade carving is an artistic creation that embodies infinite effort. Although there are not many works that truly have high artistic aesthetic value, it can be seen that the cultural connotations of jade are the fundamental reason why its price cannot be determined.

The same piece of jade, with the same texture, coming from the same raw stone, the value of a carving master and that of an ordinary craftsman is as different as that of a calligraphy beginner and a calligraphy master, both of whom write with a brush. This is also an important reason why the value of jade cannot be standardized, quantified, and quantified.
