We are very familiar with the Jade Guanyin, but do you know the Jade Tara which is very similar to it? Today I will talk to you about Jade Tara. Tara is the abbreviation of the Holy Savior Mother, translated as Darep in Sanskrit and Dolma in Tibetan. She is a goddess with auspicious meaning who guides all sentient beings in the three realms. Therefore, Tara is also called the "Mother of All Buddhas of the Three Ages" and the "Mother of All Sentient Beings." Tara comes from Tibetan Buddhism, which believes that she is a female Bodhisattva who is the incarnation of Avalokitesvara. According to legend, Tara is the incarnation of Avalokitesvara, so she is compassionate and kind, close to all living beings for offerings, and practices mercy and compassion to save all living beings. "Du" means to save, to save oneself and others, and it means to help others. "Mother" refers to motherhood, and it is the mother's virtue and original nature that are used to express the tolerance of the world. Tara can be further divided into many Taras, including the famous White Tara, Green Tara, Red Tara, etc. They can save people from the eight kinds of suffering, so they are also called the Tara who saves people from the eight kinds of suffering. The most famous image of Green Tara is her sitting on a white lotus seat, with her right hand in a mudra position and holding a blue lotus with curled branches and leaves, looking graceful and beautiful. There are two types of this mudra. One is the fearlessness mudra, which means saving all living beings from the eight difficulties. The other is the wish-granting mudra, which means giving, fulfilling wishes, bestowing protection and universal salvation. It means satisfying the wishes of all living beings and symbolizes Tara’s compassion and fulfillment of wishes. Tara’s left hand is placed outward in front of her knees with her palm facing outward, symbolizing Tara’s giving and guidance. It is said that Green Tara is the incarnation of Avalokitesvara who shed tears when he was sad because of his compassion for all living beings in the world. Therefore, she is the most compassionate. As the main deity of the twenty-one Taras, she encompasses all the merits of the other twenty incarnations. Moreover, the twenty-one incarnations of Tara have diverse images and various postures, and each incarnation contains rich Buddhist meanings, which brings rich artistic inspiration and creative space to the jade carving industry. Therefore, as the jade carving industry explores more and more Buddhist culture, the beautiful Tara is increasingly used in jade carving themes. The Tara in jade carving is actually a fusion of Tibetan murals, thangka painting art and jade carving. The jade carving of Tara has a more rugged style of Tibetan Buddhism. The images of Tara in common jade carvings mostly wear a five-Buddha crown on the head, are adorned with jewels all over the body, and have fluttering ribbons on their arms. She wears a heavy skirt and sits cross-legged on a lotus moon wheel with her right foot hanging down, representing that Tara can get up at any time to save sentient beings. The blue lotus, or Ubala flower, has different leaf widths, straight stems, and flower sizes when it accompanies different Taras, but it has also become the symbol of Emerald Tara. Carving a statue of Tara is a very laborious task that requires sophisticated carving techniques. The requirements for the Jade Tara in all aspects are very high, because the statue of Tara, the proportions of various parts of the character, and the depiction of key places such as eyebrows and eyes, all have strict regulations. Only by being familiar with these regulations can one strictly follow the norms and rules of Tantric Buddhist statues and use the technical language of jade carving to express the appearance of Tara. Moreover, in the process of jade carving, in order to coordinate with the color, shape and water quality of the original stone, it is also quite difficult to grasp the size and proportion of these subtle details. In jade carvings, Tara is often designed as a pendant-like product, and is presented using a shallow relief carving technique, which can better display the jade carver's exquisite craftsmanship and highlight the quality of the raw jade. And because Tara has six colors, including red, white and green, which echo the various colors of jade, the combination of the two can have a double meaning. Therefore, it is very popular in the jade carving industry. It also opens up a deeper integration of the jade carving industry and Buddhist culture, giving jade carving works a deeper meaning. fcgc66 fcpf18 |
