Jade carving has its own particularities

In traditional Chinese carving techniques, there is a technique called “Qiao Se”, which involves cleverly managing two or three or more natural colors on a piece of material, and using different shapes to express a theme.

Some new modern jade jewelry is different from traditional ones in carving and expression. Its characteristics are: first, the carving materials are more extensive, such as crocodiles, toucans, frogs, dolphins, etc., which are like new buds of ancient trees, full of vitality; second, the modeling pays attention to the correct structural proportions, the depiction is meticulous, the expressions are lifelike, and it gives people a new idea; third, the texture produced by the surface treatment of plain gloss and matte and changes in points, lines and small surfaces makes the layers and colors of the works more colorful; fourth, high relief or round carving is mostly used in the image, making full use of the three-dimensional space of the stone to make it. These four characteristics clearly distinguish them from works made with traditional craftsmanship, taking the art of carving to a higher level and ushering in a new trend in jade culture.

Beijing is also considered a jade carving center in my country. It has first-class jade polishing and the jade carved out of it can be regarded as fine jade. The following is a comprehensive evaluation of Beijing's jade carvings from the following five aspects.

1. Evaluation on material: The best jade, especially emerald green, has a positive, rich, bright and uniform color, a dense structure and good water quality, such as glass or ice, without any cracks, and is visually dazzling.

2. Evaluation on the shape: For plain products such as round or oval ring faces, round rings, bracelets, etc. made of excellent materials, there is no need to carve patterns. It is enough as long as the shapes are carved delicately and rounded, and then finely polished to perfectly display the original and unique texture of the jadeite.

3. Evaluation on design: Some flower pieces are often not perfect in jade material, with small defects such as small cracks, dirty color or black spots, white flowers, etc. This kind of material can often inspire the potential of the designer to create amazing works. The good parts of the materials are used to the fullest, and the bad parts are removed or weakened, so as to achieve an artistic effect of harmony between man and nature.

4. Evaluation on craftsmanship: Top-quality jade jewelry requires the craftsman to have exquisite workmanship and smooth lines. It must not only have a sense of integrity, but also be meticulous in every detail, thus fully reflecting the superb skills of skilled craftsmen.

5. Evaluation on meaning: Some flower pieces and ornaments often adopt traditional Chinese auspicious patterns that people are familiar with, such as auspicious dragons and phoenixes, peace every year, good fortune and longevity, everything goes well, and wealth and prosperity for generations.
