Classification of Jade Seals

Seals can be classified into three categories based on the carving method: negative text, positive text, and positive and negative text. If classified according to content, seals can be roughly divided into the following categories.

1. Name seal

This kind of seal is engraved with the author's name and characters. Such as: Banqiao, Baishi, Banqiao layman, Daqian layman, Fan Zeng of the Ten Wings of Jiangdong, etc.

Second, the casual chapter

A casual seal is a seal used by the author to express his feelings. For example: the fragrance of calligraphy and ink, real water has no fragrance, a seventh-rank official, a native of Xiangtan, Changsha, Hunan, a Jiangnan commoner, a seventy-year-old man, etc. This kind of seal also reflects the author's mood at a certain time or his friendship towards the donor.

3. Collection Chapter

Collectors stamp their own seal on other people's works, which is called a collection seal. The most famous ones are the collection seals of the royal family and famous stores, such as Qianlong's Treasures for Imperial Viewing, Xuantong's Treasures for Imperial Viewing, Wenyuan Pavilion Treasures, Sanxiting Calligraphy Collection, and Duoyun Collection of Paintings.

4. Portrait Seal

Portrait seals are usually engraved with animal patterns such as the twelve zodiac signs. This type of seal is often engraved with the zodiac sign of the year in which the work was created.
