How to carve jade?

Ancient people often said: "If jade is not carved, it will not become a useful object." Since ancient times, people have had a deep understanding and attention to the art of jade carving. Jade is first carved into a beautiful stone. After being carved, it immediately becomes spiritual, as if it has life, as amazing as a beauty. This is the significance of jade carving.

However, many people do not know enough about the jade carving process. Let’s take a look at how jade is carved.

Relief is a commonly used method of jade carving. It is a semi-three-dimensional carving expression. A raised pattern or shape is carved on the surface of jade to express the three-dimensionality and sense of space of the pattern. Usually, the thickness is compressed and the proportional relationship between length and width is used to express the artistic image. This is a decorative carving technique that appeared after the round sculpture.

Relief means the pattern is protruding, that is, the non-patterned part of the jade is dug out. According to the depth of the carving, it can be divided into three types: deep relief, thin relief and shallow relief, each with its own characteristics and unique features.

Elevation: The thickness of the elevation is the same as the circular elevation, or slightly thinner. Due to its own structural reasons, the image has the characteristics of strong ups and downs, strong layering, and strong three-dimensional sense.

Thin relief: Generally, a layer of the same thickness is removed from the blank space outside the image outline to make the image slightly raised, forming a very thin layer of outline on the image surface, with lines as the main part and surfaces as the auxiliary part, combining lines and surfaces, thinness and three-dimensionality, alternating between sparse and dense.
