How to judge the authenticity of jadeite at home

The price of jade is constantly rising, and counterfeiting technology is also changing with each passing day. Many friends are worried about the jade they buy, worrying that they have spent a lot of money and bought a bunch of things that are harmful to the body. Next, I will teach you how to identify jadeite by yourself at home.

First: look at the luster. Jade has a relatively high hardness and exhibits a relatively strong luster, a glassy luster. Friends who are not familiar with this aspect may not understand what glass gloss is. Let me give you a simple example. If you have glass products at home, such as glass cups, we refer to relatively clean ones. If they are dirty, they will have no luster. Under the light, wherever the light is illuminated, it will reflect light, and the reflective area will be relatively large. If the cup is not washed for a few days, its luster will fade. Friends who use it frequently may have a deep understanding of this. The luster of A-grade jade is relatively strong, while the luster of B-grade jade is weaker because it has been corroded by strong acid. It is generally oily, resinous or even waxy.

Second: look at the surface. When viewed under the light, A-grade jade is natural, with a very smooth surface. B-grade jade has been corroded by acid, and has a large number of cracks inside that are filled with gum. Since the gum has a lower hardness, the cracks will be polished inward during polishing, and the surface will show an uneven texture with a large number of wedge-shaped pits, which are connected in a network, commonly known as "acid etching patterns." Acid etching marks are the most important features for naked eye identification.

You can also check whether there is orange peel effect on the surface. What is the orange peel effect? As the name suggests, it looks like orange peel. On the polished surface of jadeite, there will be bumps and depressions similar to orange peel. This is mainly caused by the anisotropy of hardness of jadeite mineral. This is because the hardness and direction of the mineral particles are different, so this phenomenon cannot be seen if the material is very fine. This is a phenomenon that only occurs in natural jade. If our jade has an orange peel effect, then congratulations, there is no problem with your jade and it is natural.

Third, look inside. Natural jadeite has a special phenomenon, which we call fly-wing reflection. For example, the cleavage mask of jadeite has dotted and flake-like flashes, which is what we call jadeite texture, commonly known as fly wings. This phenomenon only occurs in natural jadeite. When we see this cleavage surface, we can also determine whether it is natural jadeite. If the structure of jade is denser and finer, this decomposition phenomenon will not be seen.

The structure of the jade can also be seen inside. Jade generally has a fiber interwoven structure, while B-grade jade has a broken structure inside. What is broken structure? Broken structure is jade that has been bleached and filled. The structure is relatively loose, the boundaries of the grains are blurred, the grains are broken, and the cleavage is discontinuous. This is the broken structure. To see the inside of the jade, you need to use a light. If you don’t have a flashlight at home, you can find a mobile phone, turn on the flashlight and look at it. However, this method may not be so easy to use for everyone.

The color distribution of the jade can also be seen inside. First, check whether the color is the normal jade color. If the color feels weird, then there is a problem. Secondly, see if the color deepens in the cracks. The green color of dyed green jadeite tends to concentrate in small cracks and fills the gaps between grains near the cracks along the cracks. The entire feature can be described as a silk screen, also commonly known as loofah-like distribution. This characteristic of dyed jade is the main evidence for identification by naked eye.

Fourth, you can observe the fluorescence of jadeite. We all know that natural jade has no fluorescence. If it does, it is caused by impurities inside the jade, and the fluorescence is local and very weak. B-grade jadeite has relatively strong fluorescence under the illumination of ultraviolet fluorescent light. There is another situation. If the jade is only pickled and not filled, it will also have no fluorescence, but the probability of this is relatively small. After pickling, the structure of jade will become looser and it will generally be filled with glue. However, this is not absolute. For example, those filled with lead glass or using non-fluorescent glue will not fluoresce. Friends who have ultraviolet lamps at home can try it at home. Generally, we use professional ultraviolet lamps to observe fluorescence, which is more accurate. If you use the ultraviolet light for checking banknotes at home, the accuracy will be lower. If the fluorescence of the jade is strong, you can also use this to see the fluorescence.

Fifth, judge jadeite by the sound it makes when knocking. Take two pieces of jade, hang them up with ropes respectively, and hit them gently. If the sound is crisp, they are natural; if the sound is dull, they have been processed.

Among these methods, the more useful one is to check the surface to see if there are any acid-etched patterns. Check whether there is any fly wing reflection inside and whether the color is distributed in a silk screen pattern. Then use ultraviolet light to observe the fluorescence and it can be basically confirmed.
