Jade has five colors, jadeite has six colors

The ancients said: "Jade has five colors." But jade has six colors, including purple. There are mainly several shades, but in fact jade is more than white, purple, green, red, yellow and black. Its series and variations are very colorful. Even the same green jade can have great variations. The change of color determines that its value also changes greatly. Let’s take a look at the different colors of jade.

1. Green

Green is the supreme color of jade. As green jade has a long historical and cultural status and has accumulated profound social aesthetic trends, contemporary jade enthusiasts all regard "green" as the imperial color of jade. Green jade is also the most valuable of all jades. When buying materials, experts often say how many colors a piece of material has. The color actually refers to green. The more colors, the higher the price. Due to the different proportions of chromium and iron, jade can appear in various different shades of green, including pure emerald green, as well as green with yellowish, bluish, and grayish tones. In the green color system, it can be divided into light green (bean green), positive green, emerald green (imperial green and emerald), dark green (oil green), blue-green (blue water), and dark green (black jadeite).

2. Yellow

Both yellow and red jadeite are called "fei", that is, "yellow jadeite" and "red jadeite". Yellow jade can also be divided into two categories: yellow jade and jade yellow. Yellow jade is jade with mainly jade color (brown-red) with a yellow hue; jade yellow is jade with mainly yellow hue with a brown hue. The yellowest can be chestnut yellow, chicken oil yellow and lemon yellow. Within the industry, if paired with better quality, the value of these three types of yellow jadeite is relatively high and can even reach the level of collection. The most common craftsmanship of yellow jadeite in the market is "color separation": ice-white jade body and yellow skin.

3. Red

Commonly known as: "red jadeite". Red jadeite comes in brownish red and pure red, and the pure red color without any brown tones is the most valuable. It is very rare to see red jade in jade jewelry and handicraft carvings. The brightness of red is closely related to the water head and texture. The longer the water head and the finer the texture, the brighter the color; the shorter the water head, the duller the color. If subdivided, red jade can be divided into four types: blood red, bright red, orange red and pink, from high to low quality. One thing you need to pay attention to when purchasing red jadeite is not to mistake burned red jadeite for natural red jadeite. Some red colors are post-fired, and this kind of red color is often unnatural and coarser in texture. This is the color formed after adding limonite and heating.

4. Purple

Purple has always been loved by people for its mystery. Since ancient times, purple has been endowed with the "imperial color" in mythological culture and historical culture because it has an innate dignity that is "unmissable". Purple jade is also called violet, and experts also call it "spring". Purple jade with a reddish hue is called red spring, and purple jade with a bluish hue is called purple spring. Purple jade generally has larger crystal grains and a coarser texture.

5. Colorless (white)

White jade is composed of purer jadeite minerals and does not contain coloring elements. White jade often appears in large areas in mineral deposits. The white jadeite with certain value in the market is glass-type and ice-type jadeite. Although these white jadeite has no color, they are very popular among people because of their fine texture and good water head. The flower pieces, Guanyin, Buddha, bracelets, etc. made from them are very popular.

6. Black

As you can see, black is an outlier in the jade color spectrum. It is a jade color with extreme value. It is either famous in the industry as ice glass bracelets with black floating flowers, or it appears in the corner of the warehouse as black brick material. There is also a more controversial saying that black jadeite is black jade. If classified in this way, a shining member will be added to the black jade. The value and market popularity of black jade are currently high. It is black but not ink-like, translucent and rich green, without any flaws or dark spots, and it is easily ranked among the ranks of high-end collectibles.

7. Combination of colors

In jade, it is more particular about having two or more colors on the same piece of material. For example, if a piece of material has three colors of white, green and yellow, it is called "Fulu Shou", commonly known as "tricolor"; if there are two colors of purple and green, it is called "Spring Color"; if there are four colors of green, yellow, purple and white, it is called "Fulu Shou Xi". To a certain extent, there are not many combination-color jadeites with obvious characteristics. Therefore, the value of combination-color jadeites is much higher than that of single-color jadeites of the same level.
