For ordinary people, a flashlight is just a lighting tool, but in the jade industry, it has become an essential tool for professionals to inspect goods , whether they are looking at raw stones or finished products. This method of using the light of a flashlight to observe the inside of jade is called looking at jade with light .

There are many types of professional jade flashlights. People in the industry generally choose flashlights with a perfectly round light spot, which can focus light to the center without a black center and have very strong penetrating power.

As the saying goes, experts look at the details while laymen look at the excitement. As a professional, what do you actually look at when you look at jade under a light?

1. Look at the texture

The texture is commonly known as "millet ground", "foundation" and "ground" . High-quality jade generally has a very dense structure, with particle size not exceeding 0.5MM. It has good transparency and polishing effect , and a radiant feeling.

If you place the flashlight close to the jade material and shine it directly on the surface of jadeite, it will appear translucent and focused . If you shine it directly on quartzite, marble, or a glass mixed product, the halo will be relatively scattered . Then slowly move the direct flashlight across the surface of the jade. If the light transmittance is uniform, it means the structure is uniform . Otherwise, it means the structure of the jade is not uniform.

2. Check the thickness

The thickness and clarity refers to the fineness and oiliness of the jade material. Good jade material has an extremely fine texture, and its structure is almost invisible when light passes through it. It is slightly transparent under natural light, and the translucent parts look fine and sticky, with a natural and even transition and excellent moistness.

Good jade is "oily and transparent" , inferior jade is water-transparent , and does not feel wrapped or blocked by "oil", and the worst is not transparent at all. In addition, materials from different origins will have different characteristics.

3. Look at the meat quality

The quality of jade is an important factor in determining its value. As the saying goes, "Even gods cannot tell the difference between an inch of jade and a piece of jade", but with a flashlight, we can reveal some clues. The oblique light of a strong flashlight is an important means of identifying the grain size and density of jadeite texture .

The observed results will be different if the flashlight is at different angles, at different distances from the jade material, and in different ways of illumination. It is completely misleading to describe the fineness of jade by using a flashlight directly or from behind. The particle size of jade can only be determined by using a strong flashlight at a 45° angle .

There are also requirements for the illumination method. Aim a strong flashlight at a parallel surface of a certain surface of the jade (try to choose the side without skin) at a 45° angle, and illuminate it at a distance of about 3 to 10 centimeters from the surface of the jade. You can also slowly move the single point in parallel or far and near until the floc structure is clearly visible. Illuminate at multiple points, and based on this, you can identify the fineness of the jade and the coarseness of the particles.

4. Look at impurities

When looking at jade materials, the most feared thing is the presence of cracks. What if you could have made a bunch of valuable bracelets, but in the end, because of the need to avoid cracks, you can only make a bunch of pendants? The loss would be devastating.

In addition to using a strong flashlight to examine the texture of the jade from the front, some careful experts will also shine it from the back of the jade material to look for cracks, fissures and hidden impurities.

When shining, place a strong flashlight close to the back of the jadeite and then slowly move it horizontally to identify whether there are impurities or cracks in the jade structure. If there are impurities, dark spots will appear inside the jadeite. If there are internal cracks, the flashlight light will appear normally dark when it moves horizontally, or there may be an uneven refracted light change reaction.

Don't underestimate a flashlight, it can be used for a lot of things in the hands of an expert. Of course, as the saying goes, "even gods cannot tell the quality of jade", a strong flashlight is not omnipotent. Even experienced experts are extremely cautious every time they gamble on jade.
