Compared with other jadeites, its biggest feature is that it looks black in appearance but shows an attractive green color under transmitted light. Many people easily confuse black jadeite with other types of black jade (black jade) because black jade is also black in appearance and is very similar to black jadeite. The black jades with colors similar to black jadeite include the common black Hetian jade, black obsidian, black Lantian jade, black agate, black Xiuyan jade, etc. In fact, black jade and black jadeite are two completely different concepts. The texture of black jade is the same as that of ordinary jade, which has both good and bad qualities. Generally speaking, the finer the texture, the higher the quality, and accordingly, the higher the transparency. The transparency mentioned here refers to the condition of strong light, because no matter how good the black jade is, it cannot reach the same transparency as glass jade. Jadeite appears black on the surface, and the better the jadeite, the darker it is. However, its color is not really black, but green. In other words, it's too green. Moreover, black jade appears purple under strong light, which is usually believed to represent righteousness, so it is often carved into the image of Bao Gong.

Under transmitted light, black jadeite appears green, while black jade (except black Xiuyan jade) appears a lighter black; black Xiuyan jade also appears green under transmitted light, but black jadeite is harder than black Xiuyan jade, and black jadeite has a stronger luster than black Xiuyan jade. In addition, when viewed from the reflective surface, black jadeite can show the jadeite's unique jadeite properties, while other black jades cannot show the jadeite properties. This is also one of the ways to distinguish black jadeite from other black jades.
