How to identify good jadeite?

How to identify good jadeite?

Jade is loved by more and more people for its rich colors and rich texture! The knowledge of jade is profound and extensive, so what kind of jade is considered good jade and how do we identify it?

1: Look at the color

Jade has extremely rich colors, which is an extremely important factor in evaluating the quality and value of jade! There is a saying in the jade industry: red, green, emerald and purple are the most valuable! Among the many colors, red, green and purple are the most well-known. They are all high-end colors in jade, among which green is the most gorgeous and precious.

In traditional color classification, people consider the green color of jade to be thick, bright, pretty, correct and uniform. The so-called "thick" refers to the color of jadeite being dark green without any black, while "light" means that the green color is lighter. "Yang" means bright and vivid colors that make the eyes bright, while dark and dull colors are called "Yin". "Pretty" means that the green color of jade should appear crystal clear, beautiful and lovely, otherwise it will be "old". "Positive" means the color should be pure, without any other colors. If it has any other colors, it will appear "evil". "Uniform" means that the green color should be uniform. If the green color varies in depth, it is called "flowery".

There are four types of top-quality jade green:

Imperial green is the most genuine, richest and most expensive green among jadeite, it is so green that it has no color cast! The type is old pit glass type, with fine texture, sufficient water head, and a particularly strong sense of glue!

Emerald green is a deep, rich green without any yellow, with good transparency, elegance and solemnity. Because its color resembles emerald, it is also called "emerald".

Yang Green is green with a slight yellow tint, good transparency, and lively and energetic color. Because its color is like emerald green seedlings, it is also known as "Onion Heart Green" and "Yellow Yang Green".

Spicy Yang Green usually refers to a medium-depth green without any yellow or blue. It has a delicate texture and is moist and full. It is more intense than Yang Green and is both rich and bright! Beautiful and generous, it is called "emerald green" in some places.

These four are the most valuable, with Imperial Green being the best.

The "green" of jadeite fully reflects the noble and charming charm of jadeite, and is a very important factor in determining the value of jadeite. What is even more amazing is that these greens come in different shapes, such as ribbon-shaped green; blocks of green of varying sizes and unconnected to each other; silk-like silk-like green; as well as silk-block green, uniform green, skin-closed green, and so on, which makes the green of jade even more unpredictable. In addition, experts often look for the patterns of green changes based on the general direction of green, that is, the direction of green, so as to correctly judge the depth and thickness of green.

2: Look at the water quality

The color of jade does not exist simply, it is presented through the texture of jade. The first is its transparency. Transparency is the main technical basis for identifying jadeite. The transparency of jade is commonly known as "water head" or "water" in the jewelry industry. Jade with high transparency is often said to have full water head, good water head, or long water head. The higher the transparency, the better. The usual method to test the water content of jadeite is that if light can penetrate into the jade to a depth of 3 mm, it is one point of water. The higher the penetration depth, the more water there is. If jadeite can reach three points of water, it can be considered as top quality.

Depending on the length of the water head, those jadeites with full water head, transparent or translucent, are called "old type". The old variety has bright color, the color and the base are integrated, the texture is fine and dense, and the hardness, density and refractive index are all high. Those that are opaque, dry and tender, have little water, dull luster, and are of poor quality are called "new varieties". Although the new varieties also have fresh colors, they appear dull in color and easily fall off due to poor water head, insufficient hardness and density. There is also a type between the new and old species called the "new old species".

Another factor that affects the value of jadeite is the base. The bottom layer can also be called the "foundation". It usually refers to the dryness of the jade texture. It can also be said that the base is emerald without green, and the emerald is a colored base. The color of the base does not have a definite shape characteristic, and is often expressed in different shades of colorless, white, gray, lotus root color, and light green.

The texture of the jade base is determined by the fineness of its structure, water head, and the amount of impurities and cracks. There are dozens of names to describe the base based on its color, water head and clarity. For example, glass bottom, egg white bottom, ice bottom, purple water bottom, gray water bottom, no green bottom, fragrant ash bottom, lotus root powder bottom, lake green bottom, oil green bottom, blue and white bottom, muddy water bottom, white flower bottom, white sand bottom, fine white bottom, gray sand bottom, lime bottom, rough white bottom, milky white bottom and so on. The more valuable ones include the glass bottom, which has a delicate structure, strong fluorescence, sufficient water head, uniform green color, and is translucent; the egg white bottom has a white crystal color, just like egg white, sufficient water head, and is translucent, also known as a glutinous bottom; the clear water bottom refers to a colorless or uniformly colored bottom, with sufficient water head, as crystal clear as ice, and it is also called an "ice bottom" because it is clear and clean.

3: Look at the carving

Wearing jade has been believed to ward off disasters, avoid misfortunes and protect peace since ancient times. Jade carvings have always been based on people’s ideals and emotions, skillfully combining images of animals or plants, and carving them on jade in concrete or abstract ways. For example, bats represent "happiness"; cranes and sika deer represent "longevity"; bamboo represents "progress step by step"; scorpions and tigers represent "avoiding evil", etc. These clever combinations have formed a special jade carving culture. Without exquisite skills, patience and wisdom, it is impossible to create ideal jewelry with spiritual energy. Common carving techniques include bas-relief, high relief, hollow carving, round carving, and line carving. Finely carved jade jewelry can fully express various emotional needs and is the best gift for relatives and friends.

People nurture jade, and jade also nurtures people! Jade jewelry, which is full of spiritual energy, needs careful care and maintenance. Although it is very hard, it is afraid of bumps and collisions. It is not afraid of water and oil, but it cannot come into contact with strong acids and alkalis. The best way to maintain it is to wear it at all times and use the body temperature and secreted oil and moisture to moisturize it. If you are lucky, it may have a poor texture but will become more and more crystal clear to surprise you!
