How much do you know about water adjustment of jadeite?

Water adjustment is a technique in jade processing, which means controlling its thickness to achieve a better appreciation effect. Water adjustment can also increase the reflectivity of the finished product. You may have heard of thin water materials, or eggshell inlays, which are more extreme examples of water adjustment, and are also a little bit rogue.

But what we are talking about now is water adjustment under normal circumstances. There are two types of water adjustment. One is to control the thickness when cutting the material, and the second is to hollow out from the back when carving. Why do we have to cut it thick on purpose and then hollow out from the back when carving?

That is to ensure the three-dimensional effect of the finished product. Next, I will show you a demonstration. The three pieces in the picture are finished products from the same stone. Let’s take a look at the thickness and the effect after polishing. In addition to the transparency shown in the picture, the color of jade can actually be adjusted by adjusting the water.

Because some jades have darker colors, the thickness can be used to achieve a better color. For example, if the green is too dark, it may turn black. However, once you adjust the thickness, it will become a very beautiful emerald green. So, is there an example where water adjustment is not required? Yes, those materials are useless even if you adjust the water.
