Don’t understand the “type” and “base” of jadeite? It's time to take a look at this professional analysis

For many people, the color of jade is actually quite obvious and easy to distinguish, but when it comes to the "type" and "base", many people may be at a loss, let alone distinguishing the two. So the editor will share with you what are the "type" and "base" of jade, and what is the difference between the two? What impact does it have on our purchase of jade?

What is the bottom?

The base refers to the sum of all parts of a finished jade product except for green or other main colors.

The rest refers to the comprehensive situation of all these factors, including species, changes in species, water head, various minor colors, various defects and flaws.

Among them, the change in quality refers to the phenomenon that on the same finished product, whether it is a pendant or a bracelet, some part may have good quality while the quality of other parts may become worse. Of course, the water will also change accordingly.

It can be said to be seedless, but it cannot be said to be bottomless

Therefore, the base is not the species, and the species is not the base, but the base includes the species and is another concept that is broader than the species .

When the quality is very poor, it can be said that there is no quality, but the bottom exists and cannot be avoided. We cannot say "no bottom". If the bottom does not exist, where does the color attach to? Therefore, it is appropriate to use the bottom instead when there is no seed.

Classification standards for species:

Level 1: The structure is fine and dense, no mineral particles or complex primary cracks can be seen under a 10x magnifying glass, and the particle size is less than 0.1mm;

Level 2: The structure is dense, and mineral particles and very few fine composite primary cracks can be seen under a 10x magnifying glass, with a particle size of 0.1-1mm;

Level 3: The structure is not dense enough. Under a 10x magnifying glass, mineral particles and local fine composite primary cracks can be seen, with a particle size of 1-3mm.

Level 4: Loose structure, large disparity in particle size, and particle size above 3mm.

In addition to color, the base is the key to evaluating the quality of jadeite.

When industry insiders evaluate a finished jade product, in addition to color, they also make a comprehensive observation of other factors and give an overall evaluation to estimate its quality, grade and price.

The corresponding descriptive words for the bottom are: good, average, or poor; clean, or dirty (not clean); refreshing, or gray or greyish (not refreshing), etc.

If the quality of the soil is good and the water is good, and it does not deteriorate, and there are no flaws or dirt, then the soil is good, clean, and fresh.

If the quality of the jade is average, with a few flaws that do not affect the appearance, the base is considered average.

If the water quality is poor, gray, and has defects and dirt, it will affect the appearance. We say that the bottom is poor, the bottom is not clean, the bottom is not refreshing, the bottom is dirty, the bottom is gray, and the bottom is gray.

The grading standards for "bottom":

Level 1: No cracks or gray-black threads can be seen under a 10x magnifying glass, and there are occasional white cotton and small black spots in inconspicuous places;

Level 2: No cracks or streaks are seen under a 10x magnifying glass, but a small amount of fine white cotton, black spots, and gray-black threads can be seen;

Level 3: No cracks can be seen with the naked eye, a small amount of cracks can be seen under a 10x magnifying glass, a small amount of white cotton, black spots and a small amount of ice debris can be seen with the naked eye;

Level 4: A small amount of cracks and a large amount of white cotton, black spots, gray threads and ice debris can be seen with the naked eye.

Good water quality does not necessarily mean good bottom quality, but good bottom quality means good water quality

Since the bottom includes the type of water, if the type of water is good but other factors are not, such as being dirty, etc., then the bottom is still not good, that is, a good type of water does not necessarily mean a good bottom; conversely, the bottom will be good only if all conditions are good, so if the bottom is good then the type of water must be good.

Many people use the term "bottom" instead of "type", such as: glass bottom, ice bottom, glutinous bottom, bean bottom, etc., but this is actually an ambiguous name, and only a few people in the industry use it without quite understanding it.

The meaning of bottom

The bottom of jade is also called the base, bottom sheet, also called ground, ground sheet or ground barrier.

In fact, the concept of bottom or ground is not unique to jadeite. It has existed in Chinese jade culture for a long time. For other kinds of jade, people have to consider the cleanliness of the bottom.

In traditional jade carving, the ancients had long ago called the technique of engraving concave patterns and scraping out large concave areas "carving the ground." This is exactly the same as the concept and meaning of jade bottom.

Moreover, the concept of bottom or ground is not only used in the jade industry, but also in other art forms. For example, the various patterns painted on porcelain must be set against a background color, which is called "ground color": white ground, blue ground, red ground, and yellow ground are all jargon in the porcelain industry. The famous blue and white porcelain is blue painted on a white background.

It can be seen that artistic images are carved on various "grounds", just as all things grow on the earth, and "ground" comes from this. This is the root of the formation of the concept of "ground".

It’s just that the “base” of jade has its own constituent conditions. The reason why jade emphasizes green is because green is to jade as life is to the earth.
