Let’s take a look at the five most common flaws in jadeite. Which one is unacceptable to you?

Let’s take a look at the five most common flaws in jadeite. Which one is unacceptable to you?

Jade comes from nature and its formation conditions are very complex, so almost all jade has flaws. The flaws in jade can be roughly divided into 5 types.

Cracks, stone veins, stone patterns, variegated colors, and cotton wool, different defects have different effects on jade. Generally speaking, the defect that has the greatest impact on the value of jade is cracks, and the defect that has the least impact is variegated colors.

crack

The cracks in jade are divided into primary cracks and secondary cracks. Primary cracks are cracks that exist when the jade raw stone is dug out, while secondary cracks are cracks caused by human damage during the processing, wearing, transportation, etc.

No matter what kind of crack it is, it will have a great impact on the value of jade. A piece of jade with serious cracks may even become worthless.

When there are relatively shallow cracks on jade, merchants can generally remove the cracks by polishing or carving, so most of the jade sold on the market will not have obvious cracks.

However, it is possible that some jade may have hidden and difficult-to-find cracks, so we must check carefully when purchasing jade.

We can use a strong flashlight to observe it. If cracks appear inside the jade, it will be difficult to remove them by polishing or other processing methods. If you find obvious cracks on the jade, it is recommended that you proceed with caution.

Jade is formed in a complex geological environment. During this process, it may break due to the action of external forces. If foreign matter invades after the jade breaks, the cracks will be slowly filled.

However, the filled cracks will not be restored to their original state, but will leave obvious marks, which we call cracks.

Cracks are usually congenital and visible to the naked eye, with some colored fillings in the middle. Generally speaking, cracks exist inside the jade and are difficult to remove.

Stone tendons

Stone veins are also called miscellaneous veins. As the name suggests, the miscellaneous veins of jade are like messy tree roots, and their distribution has no regularity. Stone veins are impurities formed when foreign substances penetrate into jade during the long formation process.

At first glance, impurities and cracks seem somewhat similar, but they are different. Impurities are in the base of jade, and although they will affect the appearance, they generally do not affect the quality of jade.

Stone Pattern

The stone pattern of jade refers to the healed cracks inside the jade or the lines that appear during the growth process of jade. It may also be local dislocation caused by the jade being squeezed by external forces.

The stone patterns of jade do not destroy the internal structure of jade, so the stone patterns of jade will neither affect the quality of jade nor prevent the transmission of light.

Moreover, there will be no colored fillings in the stone patterns, so it will not have much impact on the ornamental value of jade. The stone patterns are congenital, and the common ice pattern is one type of stone patterns.

How to distinguish between cracks and stone patterns? Use your fingernail to gently scrape the lines. If your fingernail feels stuck, then it is definitely a crack. You should not feel anything when you run your finger across the stone lines.

Noise

The value of colored jade is generally higher than that of colorless jade. Then why is the mixed color a flaw in jade? What kind of color is not valuable?

When color affects the ornamental value of jade, it becomes a flaw. Generally speaking, consumers prefer bright colors such as green, red, yellow, etc.

However, some colors appearing on jade make it uglier, such as small areas or dots of black, brown, gray, etc. The appearance of such colors will lower the grade of jade.

Dots of black, brown, gray, etc. are also called dirty spots. As the name suggests, people are not welcome to such colors.

But fortunately, the impurities will not affect the quality of jade. If it is a carving, we can also find a way to remove it. Therefore, the impurities do not have much impact on the value of jade.

cotton

Whether cotton wool is considered a flaw in jade is actually still controversial in the jade industry. Some people believe that cotton wool will affect the transparency of jade and is definitely a flaw.

However, some people believe that the famous snowflake cotton is hard to come by, and cotton wool is naturally not a defect. We cannot generalize, but should judge one by one based on the impact of the cotton wool on jade.

The reason why snowflake cotton is popular is that the cotton wool inside it is very beautiful. It not only does not affect the ornamental value of jade, but also adds a bit of beauty to jade.

Ordinary cotton wool will affect the ornamental value of jade, which will naturally lower the price. In fact, ordinary cotton wool also varies a lot, and the ornamental value of jade itself is quite subjective.

Everyone should learn to make their own judgments based on the actual situation. After all, the cotton wool will not affect the quality of jade. If you think the cotton wool inside has little impact, you can buy it boldly.
