Should newly bought jade be placed in hot water to “dewax” first?

Many people misunderstand the process of jade waxing as a process of counterfeiting jade! Jiamo also saw some people discussing online that if you heat the jade in 100-degree hot water for a while, then take it out and wash it, you can remove the wax on the surface of the jade.

So is it the correct way to remove wax from newly purchased jadeite? Jiamo advises everyone not to do this. Not to mention whether heating jade can remove the wax, the heating step itself will cause damage to the jade. If you take the jade out to wash it after heating, it will cause greater damage to the jade. Doing so can easily cause internal cracks in the jade, which is called "internal injury."

In fact, it is normal to have wax on the finished jade products. The process from raw materials to finished products, jade has undergone cutting, carving, and polishing successively, and there is no waxing in this process. However, if the jade is not worn for a long time after polishing, its glossiness will gradually decrease and become dull.

In order to ensure the gloss of jade, there is a last process called "jade waxing", so the newly processed jade is waxed, because waxing is a traditional process, but the wax will evaporate after a period of time and has no harm to the human body.

The purpose of wax is to make the surface of the finished jade product smoother and shinier, and to fill the tiny pits or cracks on the surface with wax. It can also prevent the entry of oil stains, just like putting a protective layer on the jade, making it difficult for the moisture inside the jade to be lost. It has the same purpose as when we girls apply sunscreen!

Jade waxing is recognized in the industry and national jewelry standards. It falls under the category of jade surface optimization and can better protect jade. It is non-toxic and harmless, so generally any polished jade will be waxed. Nowadays, nine out of ten jades on the market have been waxed, which is a normal phenomenon.

Therefore, do not try to remove wax from jade. Jade without wax is like having no protective layer and is more vulnerable to damage. Only through the waxing step can the jade be better protected.
