Tathagata or Guanyin, who is your natal Buddha?

Tathagata or Guanyin, who is your natal Buddha?

Regarding the question of the natal Buddha, I receive the following questions every day:

"I saw someone say that Tathagata is the natal Buddha, and Guanyin is also the natal Buddha. Who is the natal Buddha?"

"I was born in XX, who is my zodiac sign?"

I have to answer this question many times every day, and each time I can only give a brief answer: that is to say, the guardian Buddha of each zodiac sign, Buddha and Guanyin are both one of the zodiac Buddhas.

Many people have the same doubts as above: Tathagata is also called the natal Buddha, and Guanyin is also called the natal Buddha, so which one is it?

Birth Buddha

In order to give everyone a more accurate understanding, today we will sort it out and talk about who the zodiac Buddha is.

The "Birthday Buddha" is also called the Eight Guardian Gods. It is a Buddhist tantric belief expressed through the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches and the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination. The five elements of "earth, water, fire, wind and space" are interdependent, and there are eight Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who protect the twelve zodiac signs, so they are called "birth Buddhas", also known as the eight guardian gods.

Therefore: there are 8 natal Buddhas, including Buddha and Guanyin.

The Fayuan Zhulin quoted the Mahasanghika Sutra as saying: "Outside the Jambu embankment, in the four seas, there are twelve beasts, all of which are Bodhisattvas. When a human is born, when the Bodhisattva lives in a cave, it is these beasts that protect and benefit. Therefore, the twelve zodiac signs in the Han area follow this.

According to Buddhist scriptures, the twelve animals are the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, and each of them has a corresponding Bodhisattva to guide and protect them. This is what believers call the natal Buddha!

From the above we also know that the role of the natal Buddha is to protect and benefit. To put it simply, it can protect and bring good luck. Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can help people turn misfortune into good fortune, have a successful career, and be healthy and safe. Therefore, wearing or worshipping one's own zodiac Buddha has always been a custom that Chinese people believe in.

According to the book, the twelve zodiac animals and their zodiac Buddhas correspond to each other as follows:

Birth Buddha

Rat - Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara

Ox: Akasagarbha Bodhisattva

Tiger: Akasagarbha Bodhisattva

Rabbit - Manjusri Bodhisattva

Dragon: Samantabhadra

Snake: Samantabhadra Bodhisattva

Horse - Bodhisattva Mahasthamaprapta
