Appreciation of Jade (Jadeite) Carving

Appreciation of Jade (Jadeite) Carving

Why do we need to conduct jade appraisal? For some better jade materials, jade carving masters generally do not make too large a scale of carving, and the carving proportion will not reach 30%. On the contrary, we can call it "carving out dirt and covering cracks", with no cracks and no spots. For some jade materials with more impurities, the jade carving master will perform a relatively large-scale carving on them. The purpose is to cover up some dirty impurities and cracks in the jade material to show the artistic beauty of this jade.

Whether it is leaving good jade uncarved or removing dirt and covering up cracks, it all shows the jade carving master's utmost respect for the jade raw materials. Just like tea art, good tea does not need too many fancy utensils to set off, but should retain its original natural flavor to the maximum extent.

Out of respect for jade, we often see carving techniques such as color matching and clever carving. Jade carving masters will use the original color of the jade to create clever ideas and processing to better display the beauty of the jade. We call this carving technique "Qiao Se"; and "Qiao Diao" is when jade carving masters skillfully use the original appearance and characteristics of the jade raw materials to carve out appearances that are similar to natural spiritual objects but more vivid.

The jade carvings we see on the market can be divided into two categories. Some are carved by machines, while others are carved by hands. Some of the hand-carved works are carved by masters and look exquisite and lifelike, while others are carved by ordinary carving technicians.

As for jade carvings, it is recommended that you should see and appreciate them more often in practice, so as to feel the charm and differences in techniques of the jade carvings and enhance your artistic ability in appreciating jade.
