Faced with a pile of jadeite raw stones bought back from gambling, it is better to peel and carve them instead of leaving them alone.

First, clean the skin of the raw stone and take out the quality of the jadeite, and then decide whether it is worth carving based on the condition of the material? What types of subjects do you carve? Hand carving or machine carving?

As an old saying goes in the jade circle - "Even gods cannot tell the quality of a piece of jade", even if it is a jadeite raw stone with a large window opened, we can only preliminarily judge its basic type, water content, color, etc. through the performance of the window. If we want to further remove the piece and carve it, we must fully understand its jade properties, and most importantly, understand its flaws and find its most shining points.

Sometimes, when we grind off the skin of the original stone layer by layer, the jade we get is often worse than the performance of the window part. Friends who have played gambling stones should be able to understand the mystery!

After peeling the raw stone, jade lovers will encounter another difficult problem and worry: Is this piece of jade worth carving? Is the sculpture valuable?

Let me share a case to illustrate:

This is a fully peeled jadeite material sent by a jade friend. Let's first briefly analyze the material. The shortcomings of this jadeite are that the base is gray, there are many cotton fibers (especially on the back), and there are several transparent cracks on the top of the original stone; but the characteristics are also obvious. The material has a certain water quality, especially the water mouth, and the base is light green, and the green color in some parts is very positive.

This kind of material cannot be said to be very good, but it is not bad either. After all, jade is most valuable when it is green. The gambling nature of this material lies in the polishing. If the polishing can dissolve the cotton and the green color, it will be a good finished jade product; if the polishing cannot dissolve the cotton, then its value will be lowered.

Let me remind you here that every step from jadeite raw stone to finished product is a gamble. Those who play with raw stones are betting on whether valuable material can be taken out; those who pick materials are betting on whether the carving and subject matter are suitable for the market; those who pick rough goods are betting on whether the polishing can bring out surprises... This may be the charm of jadeite!

For this piece of material, the studio that the jade friend had previously found suggested that he carve cabbage. But we think that a piece of this size is too big to be used as a pendant, too small to be used as an ornament, and too difficult to play with as a handle, so we suggest making a dragon handle. The protruding part on the front side is exactly the water mouth of the jade, where the water quality is good and the color is positive, making it the best for the dragon head; the cracks on the top can be avoided by making peaks; the complex and numerous carvings on dragon themes can also effectively remove some of the gray cotton.

Combining medium relief with round carving can better remove impurities and flaws on the jade, while making the hand-held piece more rounded and beautiful as a whole, making it suitable for playing.

Is this piece of jade worth carving? Different people will have different opinions! As for those of us who are engaged in carving, we always believe that “If jade is not carved, it will not become a useful object”! The principle we have always adhered to is that "the jade must be well-crafted, the craftsmanship must have meaning, and the meaning must be auspicious"!
