The Jade Guanyin is always barefoot and has her eyes closed. Do you know why?

Jade Guanyin has always been one of the most popular carving themes among jade lovers. Many male jade lovers choose Jade Guanyin as their first choice when buying jade.

However, many jade lovers do not know much about how to choose Jade Guanyin. Today, I will talk to you about the story behind Jade Guanyin.

1. Why does the Jade Guanyin always keep her eyes closed?

Our country's jade culture has a long history, and many traditional carving themes have basically formed a set of fixed styles.

Take the Jade Guanyin as an example. Whether sitting or standing, facing forward or sideways, the eyes are half open and half closed. Why is that?

First, half-open eyes represent the compassionate appearance of Guanyin.

It represents the reluctance to abandon the sentient beings in the six realms, and at the same time the inability to bear to see the suffering of sentient beings in the six realms. It implies that Guanyin is unwilling to abandon the suffering of the people and protects the people.

Second, it represents that the Bodhisattva has entered the state of "dhyana" in which he observes the world with a Zen mind.

Buddhism emphasizes "not being attached to external appearances and not being moved by internal emotions", so when practicing meditation, the eyes should be "two-thirds open and eight-thirds closed", two-thirds observing the world and eight-thirds observing oneself.

Third, it means "Always look at your own faults, and don't focus on other people's faults."

That is, always improve yourself and don't always focus on the right and wrong of others.

Fourth, from the wearer’s perspective, this kind of Guanyin’s face looks more gentle, with kind eyes and a benevolent look, which makes people feel peaceful inside.

2. Why is the Jade Guanyin barefoot?

There is another detail of the Jade Guanyin, which is the feet.

Of course, not every jade Guanyin will have carved feet, but if it is carved, it must be in a barefoot state. Why is that?

According to legend, Guanyin originally wore shoes, but when he settled in Putuo Mountain, he used one of his shoes to fight off a rebellious turtle spirit, and used the other to convert a green snake that had made great contributions.

Guanyin felt that "since Mount Putuo is a pure land of Buddhism, there is nothing wrong with walking barefoot there." From then on, Guanyin walked barefoot.

Of course, this is just a saying that has been passed down, but it also lets us know that the solemn and dignified image of Guanyin also has a casual and unfussy side.

Guanyin walks barefoot, saving all living beings, and has a graceful and moving demeanor.

3. How should we choose a suitable jade Guanyin?

1. Carving

As a sculpture, the quality of the carving of Jade Guanyin determines the overall beauty.

The main aspects to consider are: whether the size proportions are coordinated; whether the lines are smooth and beautiful; whether the opening is straight, etc.

For example, for a sitting Guanyin, the best proportions should be that the length of the body is about 3 times the length of the head, and the width is about 1.5 times the width of the head. If this proportion is achieved, the overall look will be very comfortable. Too large or too small will appear uncoordinated.

There are also some other details, such as the eyebrows should be as slender as willow leaves and stand clearly above the eyes.

2. Clarity and cracks

Guanyin is a figure sculpture, so the requirements for the face are quite strict. You must choose a jade Guanyin with a clean face and no cracks.

At the same time, the Buddha's light is the light of wisdom emanating from between Guanyin's eyebrows, and it cannot have any flaws, spots, cracks, etc.

3. Color

Jade has many colors. Although green is the most respected color, when choosing Guanyin, you don’t have to blindly pursue green. You can choose according to your own conditions.

For example, if you are older, you can choose a darker jade Guanyin to show your calmness.

Young people can choose a brighter-colored jade Guanyin to highlight their vitality and vigor.

4. Size

When purchasing a jade Guanyin, don’t pursue the bigger the better. Buy a Guanyin size that is appropriate based on your own conditions.

For example, children can choose a smaller jade Guanyin.

Consumers who are a little fatter can choose a larger one.

In addition, as for the texture of the jade Guanyin, as long as it is natural jade, you can choose according to your preferences and financial conditions.

Of course, if it is for collection or heirloom, it is best to choose a jade Guanyin with good appearance and texture (such as glass-type or ice-type jade).
