Black jadeite is generally believed to be a type of jadeite that appears black in green, but this is actually not very accurate. Black jadeite is broadly defined as jadeite. The academic term in mineralogy is called "diopside jadeite" or "diopside jade". It has good water head, is translucent and green, but its hardness is lower than that of jadeite. How can you pick high-quality black jadeite? Remember the following tips and you will be able to understand black jadeite. 1. Net Use a strong flashlight to look for impurities and white cotton. Black jadeite has the most impurities, which will not be visible if it is thick. Generally, those with better water head can be completely transparent if the water head is more than one millimeter. It is worth noting that the color and saturation of black jadeite that is translucent usually are not sufficient. Good black jadeite cannot be translucent because of its old species (small crystals and tight combination) and high blackness (strong color saturation). 2. Color The surface is dark enough and the water is green enough. The black here is also particular: First, it must have good quality. Jadeite without good quality will be dry and dull in black. Second, the color saturation must be sufficient. Jadeite is colored by chromium ions. Only when the chromium ion concentration is sufficient can the saturation of black be sufficient. Third, the green here refers to the translucent green. It cannot be based on the flashlight, but should be based on the translucent color of natural light, because the color temperature of flashlight light is different. Generally, when yellow light is used to shine through black jade, the more pure and intense the reflected green is, the better the quality is. Of course, pure green black jade is hard to come by. Usually the reflected light is blue-green or gray-green. If it is of good quality and pure, it can be considered mid- to high-end black jade. 3. Gang To judge good quality black jadeite, look at the polished surface. The black jadeite is of good quality, has a dense structure, high hardness, and a strong glassy luster. This is the same as looking at ordinary jadeite. 4. Seed The quality of black jadeite does not refer to the water head, but to the smallness of the crystals and the tightness of their combination. The smaller the crystals and the tighter the bonds between them, the firmer, finer and more lustrous the texture of the jadeite will be. 5. Hidden The frosted surface of black jade can usually hide a lot of white cotton or impurities, and many of them cannot be seen unless you look carefully. 6. Heavy The bigger and thicker the black jadeite is, the better. Relatively speaking, black jadeite has quite a lot of impurities. If it has perfect clarity and good quality, water content and color, it is even rarer. 7. Work The layered sense of the black jade carving can best reflect the difference between black jade and other jades. Therefore, a good piece of black jade must be accompanied by good carving to maximize the value of black jade. 8. Oil Good black jade has a very delicate texture and some oily reflectivity, and this oiliness is also a reflection of the black jade's aging.
