Famous Chinese Carvers: Sihui

Famous Chinese Carvers: Sihui

Sihui carving is a style of carving that we hear and see more often. It is an improvement on the stone carving techniques of Fujian. of. The works of Sihui craftsmen are mainly popular. The artisans are not allowed to choose the materials and do not pay attention to extreme details, so the work is done quickly and the cost is very low, which makes the finished product have a "divine" agility. Most of the common jade smiling Buddhas on the market are carved by Sihui craftsmen.

Sihui craftsmanship has rich themes and unique style. It draws on the stone carving techniques of the Fujian region and follows the "small, fast and flexible" approach. "Small" means low processing cost. Sihui workers take cost-first approach, pursuing similarity in spirit and saving as much as possible on details. Judging from your two fish, the one from Sihui has obviously fewer scales than the one from Jieyang. But the benefits of doing so are obvious. It saves a lot of time and labor costs, and later polishing is also easy to handle.

Compared with the Jieyang workers' obsessive principle of continuous improvement, Sihui workers can be said to be the least picky about materials. No matter what kind of materials, Sihui craftsmen will make them into finished products. It can be said that Jieyang workers focus on quality, while Sihui workers focus on quantity. The so-called "fast" refers to its fast processing speed.

If a master works in Jieyang, it may take him ten days to produce one finished product, but if he works in Sihui, he can produce ten finished products in one day. The carving masters in Sihui win by quantity, on the one hand to make money, on the other hand to help customers save processing costs. In addition, it also greatly shortens the cycle from raw materials to finished products of jade, facilitating faster circulation of funds.

Therefore, Sihui craftsmen occupy a large proportion of the industry because of their fast delivery and non-picky materials. But it doesn't mean that the things made by Sihui craftsmanship are necessarily bad. Although it pursues quantity, there are also many Sihui masters who are very flexible in their craftsmanship and can make a variety of materials with different flavors, which is also something that Jieyang craftsmanship does not have.
