There are two main types of Houjiang Stone. The first type is the flood impact layer near the mountain. This flood impact layer is covered by a layer of slope deposits, which the locals call "hairy layer". It is about one meter thick at the top of the mountain and becomes thicker towards the foot of the mountain, reaching eight to ten meters. The gravel layer is under the slope deposits. The second type is the modern riverbed floodplain type. It is divided into Lao Houjiang and Xin Houjiang. The jadeite raw stones of Xin Houjiang are below the impact layer, while those of Lao Houjiang are produced from the bottom of the impact layer.

Everyone knows Lao Houjiang, which is also a classic mining area. The skin of the jadeite raw stone here is gray-green. The characteristics are that each individual stone is relatively small, weighing tens or hundreds of grams, and rarely exceeds 0.3 kilograms. It is mainly water stone, and looks relatively round, with a shape and size like a mango. The sand skin has many colors, delicate texture, and often has a waxy shell. The small jadeite raw stones produced in Lao Houjiang are often full of green and high emerald, with very good water head and water quality, and a tight structure. We have all heard that "nine out of ten Houjiangs have water", and the finished products made from them have very high quality. Even if there is a little green or flower, the color will look very bright after polishing, and the effect is very good, which is the so-called "color reversal".

Although the blocks of Lao Houjiang are very small, the probability of excellent or full green is extremely high. The biggest disadvantage of Houjiang's mine is that it has many cracks. The base is good with thin skin and incomplete wax shell, and the color of the light green skin is correct, while the color of the dark green is biased. The color that is too dark will turn black after processing. The quality of Lao Houjiang material is good and it is a good material for making ring faces.

Although there are many types of skin shells, those with wax shells are relatively rare. When the wax shell of Houjiang raw stone is dug out, it is not tightly attached to the skin shell (unlike Nanqi and Mowanki, where the wax shells are relatively tight). Some of them only need to be exposed to the sun or soaked in water and tapped lightly to fall off the wax shell. There are quite a lot of Xiaoman color materials in dozens of grams, and the quality is also good. The color will double after polishing. This may be one of the main reasons why Houjiang is famous.

Houjiang does not produce black Wusha, and the jade produced must be transported to Wacheng for distribution. Now Houjiang on the market is almost all new Houjiang. The skin of new Houjiang is thicker than that of old Houjiang, and it also has a waxy shell. Individual pieces are larger than old Houjiang, generally within 3 kilograms, and there are slightly larger ones. The water quality and base are much worse than those of old Houjiang. The color of the finished product will become darker after polishing. Generally speaking, even the finished products made from new Houjiang with full green are difficult to become high-end jadeite.

The Houjiang materials available on the market now do not seem to be of very good quality. Even the better ones are very cracked and difficult to extract. Because they are very small, only a few dozen grams or a dozen grams, and have cracks big or small, they are basically worthless.
