Eight tips to help you choose a jade ring

Eight tips to help you choose a jade ring

The first ring was created two thousand years ago. From its origin to the present day, it has gradually become a unity of aesthetics and wealth, and has gradually been given different cultural meanings.

Rings can be roughly divided into two categories based on their shapes: inlaid and plain.

Inlay rings are more invisible than visible

The main shapes of inlaid jade are: egg-shaped, saddle, marquise, teardrop, heart-shaped, rectangular, nostalgic, casual, and irregular. Among them, the egg-shaped jadeite is the most eye-catching and loved.

Shape and proportion

The general shapes of jade ring faces are double convex, flat convex and concave convex. Among them, the biconvex type has the highest value, followed by the flat convex type, and the concave convex type has the lowest value.

The proportions of its length, width and height are mainly pleasing to the eye, but there is still an ideal proportion.

Inlay and production

The materials and craftsmanship used to set jade rings also vary. In terms of materials, it is divided into platinum, gold, rose gold, K gold, silver and other materials.

The main production methods are: claw setting, clip setting, and bezel setting. Exquisite inlay craftsmanship combined with high-quality jade can always bring out the luxurious temperament of jade.

Size ratio

Colored jade, especially green, is rare and hard to come by, so ordinary ring faces are not easily polished, and ordinary oval jade ring faces have a standard proportion.

For example: 6*8, 7*9, 8*10, 10*12, 12*14, 14*16, etc. The larger the size, the greater the value and the rarer it is.

thickness

If the thickness of the cabochon jade is too thin, it will appear imperfect and less full, and it will also leak light. A jade egg-shaped surface that is thick enough will increase its brightness and crystal clearness.

Selection of inlaid rings

In order to highlight the quality of jade, many merchants will polish it very thinly during the processing, and it is thin in the middle and slightly thicker on both sides, like an egg shell, which is easy to crack. This type of jade ring face usually has glue filled at the bottom, and the merchant will cover the entire bottom when setting it.

When purchasing, you can ask the store owner whether the product has a covered bottom. You can also turn it over to the back to see if the bottom is covered with metal.

If the ring face itself is thick enough, the merchant will usually hollow it out or leave it without a bottom when setting it, in order to present the ring face in the best condition.

Plain jade is natural

The plain jade ring is made from a single piece of jade. It does not require a ring setting and can be worn directly on the finger. Plain jade is generally much more expensive than jade of the same quality because of its larger size.

Saddle Ring

As the name suggests, the shape of the saddle ring is like a saddle, so it is called a saddle ring. The saddle ring is composed of the upper part of the saddle and the saddle plus the ring. The main thing to look at is whether there are cracks in the jade material. The ring face will mostly have the greener part, while the ring band is usually mostly colorless.

Board Index

In ancient times, jade finger bands were sleeves used to protect the fingers that pulled the strings when shooting arrows.

After the establishment of the Qing Dynasty, as the Manchus used bows and arrows less frequently, jade finger rings became a plaything for high-ranking officials. Occasionally, the emperor would reward them to his ministers. During the Qing Dynasty, as Emperor Qianlong particularly liked finger rings, civil and military officials in the court also began to collect jade finger rings.
