What are the stone flowers of jade?

The so-called stone flower refers to the floc-like white precipitate in jade.

Because of the different shapes and characteristics, the industry often calls those with higher density and darker color "stone brain" or "dead flower", the more scattered ones "starry sky" (ice-type orchid jadeite), the smaller density and lighter color ones "cotton", and the white and green ones are called "scallion tofu". Some people also associate stone flower with green or ground and call it "leek mixed with tofu".

The obviousness of the stone flowers is often related to the "water quality" (transparency) of the jade. When the water quality is good, the stone flowers appear prominent, but when the water quality is poor, the stone flowers are not obvious or are hidden. When there are obvious stone flowers in jade, it is easy to cause the ground to eat away at the green, affecting the value of the jade.

Stone flowers can be divided into soft and hard. The so-called hard means that the boundary between the stone flowers and the green is obvious, and the so-called soft means that the boundary between the two is not very distinct. Hard stone flowers have a greater impact on the value of jadeite, while softer stone flowers can dissolve in the green and have much smaller impact on the value of jadeite. The biggest impact is large pieces of scattered stone flowers.
