Four methods of identifying jadeite taught by experts

Four methods of identifying jadeite taught by experts

1. Wrap your hair around the jade and burn it

It is believed that if you wrap a strand of hair around jade and then light it on fire, if the hair burns off, it is fake jade or artificially processed jade; if it does not burn off, it is natural jade.

I don't know where this method came from or what the principle is. Almost everyone who works with jade has heard of this method, and many people believe it to be true. I believe not everyone has tried it. But I have tried it myself. If you wrap a strand of hair around natural jade and then set it on fire, the hair will break. Obviously this method is invalid and there is no scientific theory to support it. At least so far, it has not been discovered that natural jade has the ability to resist fire.

2. Scratching glass

It is believed that jadeite can scratch glass because of its high hardness, so it is natural jadeite. If the jade cannot scratch glass, it means it is fake jade or artificially processed jade.

However, glass is quartz, the hardness of quartz is 7, and the hardness of jade is 6.5 to 7. Glass is cryptocrystalline and has the same hardness in every direction. Jade is polycrystalline and its cleavage surface has different hardness, so when scratching the glass, jade may not scratch the glass and will suffer a certain degree of damage.

3. Drip

It is believed that if water drops do not spread out when dropped on jade, then it is natural jade. If the water droplets spread out, it is fake jade or artificially processed jade.

The principle is to utilize the tension phenomenon on the smooth surface of jade. Because the production method of B-grade jade was relatively backward a few years ago, there will be obvious acid-etched netting and acid-etched pits on the surface of B-grade jade. When water droplets are dropped on it, they will not appear in the shape of round beads but will spread out.

However, in recent years, B-grade jadeite will undergo a second polishing process. After this process, the acid-etched patterns and acid-etched pits on the surface of the B-grade jadeite will disappear completely even under a ten-fold magnifying glass. Therefore, even if water drops on artificially processed B-grade jadeite, the water drops will not spread out.

The method of dripping water might have been useful a few years ago when the technology for artificially processing B-grade jadeite was relatively backward, but it is completely useless now.

4. Listen to the sound

It is believed that if the sound made by knocking on jade is crisp, it is natural jade. If the sound is dull, it is fake jade or artificially processed jade.

The principle is that the crystal particles of natural jade are dense, so the propagation of sound waves is less affected after being knocked, and the sound is crisp. However, because B-grade jade has been acid-washed, its fiber structure is destroyed and becomes loose. Therefore, the propagation of sound waves is affected after being knocked, and the sound is relatively dull.

In fact, with the development of artificial jade processing technology, this method is no longer so reliable. because:

First, the filling material of B-grade products has been improved, and the sound when knocked is also crisp.

Second, the knocking sound is not only related to the density, but also to the stone pattern. Natural jade with stone patterns also sounds dull when knocked.

Third, for people who have never come into contact with jade or know little about jade, they have no way of distinguishing between the so-called crisp sound and the dull sound.

Fourth, this method is not feasible for small beads, ring faces, inlaid jade jewelry, etc.

My suggestion is that for most ordinary jade lovers and consumers, the fastest and best identification method is to send it to a regular jewelry appraisal center for appraisal. Don't be superstitious about methods taught by so-called masters. Believe in the scientific method.

This saves trouble and is safe and secure.
