Is it difficult to identify jadeite? Experts talk about how to identify A-grade and B-grade jadeite

Jade identification has always been a concern for everyone. As a consumer, you certainly hope that the products you spend your money on are genuine. The same is true when purchasing jadeite. Currently, jade counterfeiting technology is becoming more and more sophisticated, so the identification of jade is still a relatively difficult problem for ordinary consumers. Now, let’s take a look at how experts talk about the identification of A-grade and B-grade jadeite. (The following pictures are all A-grade jadeite)

Is it really difficult to distinguish between A-grade jadeite and B-grade jadeite when identifying? Experts believe that the characteristics of B-grade jadeite are relatively obvious and can be identified by gem appraisers using conventional instruments. "The usual identification methods are visual and instrumental. Magnifying and inspecting the surface and internal features is a more effective method for identifying processed jade. Instruments are used to measure the density, refractive index, fluorescence, infrared spectrum and other characteristic indicators of jade, so as to identify the color, luster, density and structure of jade. If it is natural jade, under a high-power microscope, the grains in the interwoven structure of crystal fibers are angular. However, this is not the case for jade treated with strong acids, which often leave traces of dissolution (smooth). Infrared spectrum detection can distinguish whether there are fillers in the internal structure of jade. The filler epoxy resin of B-grade jade is an organic polymer, and the destruction of the internal structure is the ironclad evidence for identifying B-grade jade.

What is worrying is whether slight injection of glue or wax may cause the jade to become a B-grade jade when it is identified? "There is no precise international standard for the difference between optimized jadeite and B-grade jadeite," the expert said. "The only definite standard is that no matter what methods or means are used, the original internal structure of jadeite cannot be destroyed, because once the internal structure is destroyed, jadeite will become very fragile and easy to break and fracture. In addition, B-grade jadeite that is immersed in more paraffin wax will age and produce white spots over time, causing the transparency of jadeite to deteriorate and show porcelain properties."

The so-called A-grade jade refers to natural jade, that is, jade produced by nature and only subjected to normal processing and polishing. People's requirements for the quality of jade are getting higher and higher. After all, jadeite with bright colors and good quality produced by nature is rare and expensive; there are not many with good colors but slightly worse quality. Most of them are of poor color, coarse quality, and without water. The contradiction between this market demand and the small output of high-quality jade is becoming increasingly acute. Many businesses try to improve or change the color and transparency of poor-quality jade through artificial optimization processing, and thus B, C and B+C were born.

This article introduces the differences between A-grade and B-grade jadeite. As well as the difficulties in identifying jadeite and experts’ insights. I hope everyone will be cautious when purchasing jadeite. It is best to buy it from a place with a good reputation and remember to ask for an appraisal certificate.
