Jade identification - experts teach you how to distinguish between jade and jadeite

In jade counterfeiting, it is very common to use raw water bubble stones to impersonate raw jade stones, or to use finished water bubble products to impersonate finished jade products.

Most jade lovers have heard of water foam, but not many have actually seen it.

Although some characteristics of water bubble are very similar to jadeite, the two are essentially different and the price gap is also very large.

The main mineral component of jadeite is jadeite (sodium aluminum silicate); while the main mineral component of chrysanthemum is albite jade, which is produced from the associated stones of jadeite raw stone.

In the eyes of experts, it is easy to distinguish between water foam and jadeite, but for newcomers to the jade industry, it is very difficult to distinguish between the two.

It is also because of this that the jadeite counterfeited by Shuimozi mainly deceives newcomers.

This also leads to the fact that there are very few water bubbles in the regular jade market. They usually appear in large numbers in jade shops and mobile jade stalls in tourist areas.

Because water bubbles generally have good water quality, some are even very transparent, appearing translucent or transparent. But their colors are relatively simple, mostly white, followed by grayish white, grayish blue, and a small number of blue-green.

Therefore, unscrupulous businessmen often use highly transparent white water bubbles to impersonate colorless high ice jadeite in order to reap huge profits.

There are several obvious differences between jadeite and water foam:

The structure of jade is far more delicate than that of water bubble; the color of jade is richer; the rigidity and glossiness of jade are stronger; the refractive index, specific gravity and hardness of jade are all higher than those of water bubble.

Therefore, we distinguish and identify jadeite and water foam based on these aspects.

Let’s look at the first one: weighing and scoring:

Because the density of jadeite is higher than that of water jade, there is a big difference in weight between the two.

When you hold jade in your hand, you feel a distinct pressure, while jade feels light and airy.

At the same time, the hardness of jade is much higher than that of water foam, so this characteristic can be used to identify it by scratching.

It is easy to scratch a jadeite with quartz or crystal, but it is not easy to scratch jadeite (of course, this method is not suitable for direct identification, and it is easy to damage the jadeite.)

The second method is to observe with your eyes:

This identification method makes use of the fact that jadeite has a higher refractive index than jadeite.

To the naked eye, jadeite appears to have a glassy luster and is quite dazzling; whereas the reflected light from water foam is relatively weak, has no glassy luster, and the light is also relatively soft.

One thing must be noted here: if jadeite of poor quality is compared with jadeite of very high quality, this identification method may not be accurate.

Because when comparing jadeite of poor quality with jadeite of high quality, the difference in hardness and density between the two will not be very large, and their gloss will be very close.

The third method is tapping:

This knocking method is mainly used to distinguish and identify finished jadeite products and water foam products.

When knocked, the sound of jade is very crisp, while the sound of water bubble is relatively dull, and it is easy to distinguish.

The fourth is to look at the appraisal certificate:

For jade lovers, the most direct and accurate way is to go to a regular appraisal agency to issue an appraisal certificate.

Of course, if the appraisal certificate is issued by a merchant in the market, you should still be skeptical.

Finally, I still have to say something to my fellow jade lovers: there is no identification method that can make a 100% accurate identification.

Counterfeiters are also well aware of these identification methods, so they will use special means to make up for these aspects.

For example: In order to make the weight of the Shuimozi raw stone close to that of the jadeite raw stone, some counterfeit vendors often fill the inside of the Shuimozi raw stone with lead to increase the specific gravity.

Although water foam is often used to impersonate ice jadeite, it is not absolutely true.

After all, there are many kinds of water bubbles, so the ways of counterfeiting will also be diverse:

Some jadeite has a bluish color band and is often processed into bracelets, pendants or carvings and sold as floating flower jadeite.

Some have yellow bands and are used to impersonate yellow jadeite;

There are also bubbles with many small bubbles in them, which look very similar to the cotton spots of snowflake cotton, and are therefore used to impersonate snowflake cotton jadeite...

Therefore, when we buy jade in the market, we must be vigilant and look at the jade you are going to buy with a skeptical attitude. Many fake jades will naturally be exposed.
