Professional description of the jade carving process

As the saying goes, "clothes make the man, gold makes the Buddha," so what jade relies on is its "carving." The value of jade is based on many aspects, including water quality, carving, creativity, author, etc. There are also many cases where jade is called top-grade jade due to its exquisite craftsmanship.

At present, domestic carving techniques are divided into two categories, carving of large pieces (ornaments) and carving of small pieces (accessories). The jade carving process mainly includes five major steps: preliminary preparation, design, cutting, carving and polishing, which are abbreviated as: discussion, drawing, cutting, carving and polishing in the jargon.

Jade carvings need to be designed and arranged according to the characteristics of the jade jewelry. For example, in the design of a jade laughing Buddha, the green of the jade should be arranged on the belly of the laughing Buddha as much as possible, and not in other parts. In the design of a jade landscape ornament, the green of the jade must be carved into plants, and the transparent parts should be the landscape or other things.

After finalizing the design, use a pencil to draw the outline of the cut on the jadeite rough stone. Cut the jadeite raw stone according to the outline.

Chopping: Use a diamond wheel to chop off useless parts beyond the outline; Chiseling: Use diamond to further chisel away useless parts according to the depth of the bumps; Punching: Use diamond to punch irregular raw stones into the basic style of finished jadeite products; Rolling: Use a rolling mill to make it thinner, open the face, mouth, eyebrows, ears and nose, etc.; Hooking: Use a mill to hook out more subtle patterns and lines.

5. Jade carving process - polishing and decoration process

Jade polishing: There are two main ways of polishing. One is manual polishing, which is to carefully polish the jadeite by hand to ensure that the jadeite is intact and not damaged. Usually this method is suitable for mid-to-high-end jadeite. The other is machine polishing, which can be used to polish large quantities of jadeite at a time. The disadvantage of the machine polishing method is that it can easily damage the jade and cause cracks, and it is usually suitable for low-end jade.
