How rare is jade? You will know it after visiting the mining area.

When we walk into a shopping mall, we can see that the prices of jade jewelry seem to be frighteningly high. A high-quality jade bracelet can cost up to hundreds of thousands, and a palm-sized high-quality jade plaque can cost more than 100,000.

At auctions, jade jewelry has frequently taken the top spot and has been sold at sky-high prices of hundreds of millions. Why are jade jewelry so expensive?

Digging is difficult and dangerous

First of all, jade is a natural mineral, and every piece of it is mined will become less and less. In addition, there are not many countries in the world that produce jade, and Myanmar is the only country that produces high-quality jade.

The reserves of jade are scarce and mining is very difficult. In Myanmar, people's methods of mining jade are still very backward. Most villagers do not know how to survey when looking for jade and can only try their luck everywhere. Among the hundreds or even thousands of tons of stone that jade miners dig out every year, less than one-tenth of them are real jadeite raw stones. The excavation of every piece of jade embodies the hard work of the jade digger.

It is said that in the earlier times, the Burmese people were unable to dig out a large piece of jade from the soil, so they had to burn the block with firewood, pour cold water on it to smash it open, and then pick up the green block.

Frequent fighting in mining areas

The valuable jade resources are often the main reason for the endless fighting among various forces in Myanmar.

The raw stone is a huge gamble

Jade diggers have worked hard to dig out the ore, but they cannot be sure whether it is jadeite or not. Even today when technology is so advanced, people cannot directly observe the inside of the raw stone. Therefore, jade miners can only mine in large quantities. If the raw stone is ordinary stone, the diggers' hard work for more than ten days will be wasted.

Very difficult to carve

Jade is very green and once broken it cannot be reshaped. It is also very difficult to carve. A jade carver may ruin a piece of high-quality jade if he makes a mistake.

According to the current market situation, high-end jadeite, whose prices have skyrocketed, has better sales, because everyone understands that with every piece of high-quality jadeite sold, there is one less piece, and it has more potential for appreciation in the future.
