Jade’s value skyrocketed with a little polishing powder. Why does polishing powder have such a miraculous effect?

Many jade lovers probably don't know much about polishing powder.

It is somewhat different from the B+C dyed jade we usually talk about.

The color of jadeite that has been polished with powder is more vivid.

Even the appraisal certificate will show that it is A-grade jadeite.

Some unscrupulous merchants will use polishing powder to dye dozens of pieces of low-quality jadeite, and package them as colored mid- to high-end jadeite.

Polishing powder is not like acid-washed and glue-injected jade, which uses chemical substances to change the properties of jade. Instead, it is a physical integration that is more concealed and difficult to detect.

Today Brother Xuan will share with you the origin of polishing powder.

First of all, you need to understand what is polishing powder?

Polishing powder is the raw material used in the polishing process of jade.

The purpose of using it is to polish the surface of jade to make it more delicate and smooth, increase the area of jade's reflection relationship, and thus improve the gloss of jade.

In this process, colorless or white polishing powder is generally used.

It itself will not cause any other impact on jade.

So why can polishing powder be dyed?

This is because some businessmen add colorants to polishing powder in order to maximize their profits.

Then it is polished with polishing powder with colorant added. After polishing, it will not be cleaned, but wax will be used to seal it directly on the surface of the jade.

After this operation, the brightly colored polishing powder will be firmly attached to the surface of the jade.

This caused the originally light-colored jade to turn purple and green, and naturally its price skyrocketed.

What kind of jadeite uses colored polishing powder?

There are two prerequisites for jadeite to be successfully colored with polishing powder: first, the water content must be poor, and second, the base cannot be gray.

The poor quality of jade is because good quality jade has a good internal density and is difficult to color with polishing powder.

Jade with a gray base cannot show bright colors such as green and purple.

Therefore, the types of jade that are colored with polishing powder are mostly white-based green, spring-colored and violet.

What kind of jade can be counterfeited by coloring it with polishing powder?

The jadeites that are most likely to be damaged after being colored by polishing powder are blue flower jadeite and spring-colored jadeite.

By incorporating blue polishing powder or purple polishing powder into jade, you can create imitation blue flower jade or imitation spring-colored jade.

Both of them are mid-range jadeite and are valuable. There is no need for Brother Xuan to explain in detail the profit margin here. Those who understand will understand.

Can jadeite that is colored with polishing powder be identified?

Of course it can. As mentioned in the previous article, "Jadeite colored with polishing powder can still be issued with a Grade A jadeite identification certificate."

It should be noted here that although the certificate will show A-grade jadeite, as long as it has been dyed with polishing powder, sensitive words such as "polishing powder residue" or "colored polishing powder seen on the surface" will be marked on the certificate.

If any jade lovers have doubts about the jade identification certificate, they can try the following identification methods.

1. Use alcohol to wipe

Natural jade will not fade when wiped with alcohol, but the colored polishing powder will reveal its true color.

Because colored polishing powder can only gather in small pits on the surface of jade, while the color of natural jade is embedded in the internal crystal particles.

2. Observation through light

Under light transmission conditions, the color of the jade surface can be observed. If it has been treated with colored polishing powder, polishing powder residues can be found on the surface in the form of dots, nets or flakes, and are scattered in large quantities along the concentrated cracks.

To sum up, if you come across mid-range jadeite with bright colors and relatively "affordable" prices, you should be vigilant and observe whether it is a counterfeit jadeite that has been slightly "powdered".
