Jade Basics: An article to help you understand jade and its professional terms

1. Types of Jade

The species refers to the structure of jade. Jade is a tightly structured aggregate composed of countless crystal particles. The smaller the crystal particles, the closer the species is to the glass species, and the larger the crystals, the closer it is to the bean species. On the premise of fine structure, jade can be classified by type, which can be divided into glass type, ice type, glutinous type, and bean type jade. It can be further subdivided into high ice type, glutinous ice type, glutinous type, etc.

2. Jade Water

Water refers to the "water head" of jade, which in layman's terms is the transparency of jade. The length of jade water can be divided into transparent, translucent and opaque. Because the "type" of jade often directly affects the "water" of jade. For example, the water head of glass-type jade is particularly long, and it is transparent jade. The ice-type jade has a longer water head and is translucent, and so on. Therefore, when we usually play with jade, we often call the type and water together. Jade with good type and water is expensive, while jade with bad type and water is worthless.

3. The old and young of jadeite

The age (or newness) of jade refers to the density of the crystals in the jade. Jade is composed of many crystal particles. The water quality of jade is based on the fact that the jade crystal structure reaches a certain density. Therefore, jade with very loose crystal particles is usually called jade without water quality. Its surface is dry and the density is very small. A drop of water will quickly seep into the sparse gaps in the jade. The tighter the connections between jade crystals, the higher its hardness. When cutting, sparks fly and it is very difficult to cut. At this time, we say that this type of jade is very old. In fact, what we mean is that the jade crystals are very tightly connected. The crystals of tender jade are not tightly connected and are relatively soft.

4. The prices of jadeite are often large, medium and small.

If you are dealing with jade, the owner will often tell you an approximate price, namely: small four, medium three, big five. Small represents: 1-3, medium represents: 4-6, big represents: 7-9, and the last three corresponds to a three-digit number, namely: hundred, and so on. For example: medium four, represents 4000 to 6000, and big three represents 700 to 900.

5. Jadeite color roots

If you observe jade carefully, you can see that there is a dot or a very thin line of a darker green on the jade. This darker green gradually fades and slowly transitions into a lighter green, which is the color root.

6. Jadeite's green properties

The jadeite nature of jade is also called fly wings, which is a unique characteristic of jadeite. Fly wings are just one of the manifestations of jadeite's jadeite properties. They are primarily an intuitive expression of the grain size and mutual combination relationship of jadeite, the main mineral component of jadeite, under naked eye observation. In layman's terms, they are the reflections of the cleavage surfaces of jadeite minerals that can be seen on the surface of jadeite. The more obvious the fly wings are, the more obvious the jadeite properties are.

7. The rigidity of jadeite

If a piece of jade has very fine texture, tight structure and high hardness, it will have a strong luster after grinding and polishing. This luster will look hard and cold, so it is called rigidity.

8. Picking up Jade

The same as "getting out of the goods" and "getting out of the water" refer to the final effect of jadeite, that is, it can be worn directly after polishing.

9. Jadeite glue peeling

Very old jadeite with high hardness will have a layer of glue-like substance covering the surface after polishing, hence the name "glue". The jadeite that has become sticky must first be very old, and this kind of jadeite is very expensive on the market.

10. The fluorescence of jadeite

Fluorescence refers to the jadeite with fine texture and exquisite workmanship, which produces a visual phenomenon of self-luminescence at its edges like fireflies. This kind of jadeite is of very good quality and belongs to top-grade jadeite.

11. Grade A, Grade B and Grade C Jade

Grade A jade refers to natural jade, which is made into finished products through physical processing without changing the internal quality of the jade;

B-grade jadeite refers to jadeite that has been artificially rinsed with strong acid to remove impurities, and some are injected with glue. These jadeites are all B-grade jadeite, which are fake jadeite.

C-grade jadeite refers to jadeite that has been artificially dyed.

12. Maintenance of Jade

Do not place jade together with hard objects, or avoid hitting it against hard objects; in general, you only need to wash it with clean water and wipe it dry with a paper towel. Remember not to apply corrosive substances on jade.

13. Is Myanmar the only origin of jadeite?

Jadeite belongs to jadeite. According to the type of mineral, jadeite is produced in many places, including Myanmar, Japan, Guatemala, Russia, China, the United States, etc., but only Burmese jadeite reaches gem grade.

14. Is it true or false that the green color of jade will grow longer?

After being worn for a long time, the color or color roots of jade may extend and diffuse. The color may also become more uniform, pure, and gorgeous. This will not happen with B-grade and C-grade jade. This is what we call human-like jade. But it is only a possibility that the color will improve. Jade was formed over billions of years, and only a few jades will change in such a short period of time.

15. Is natural jade always cold?

Real natural jade feels cold to the touch. B-grade and C-grade jade may not be as obvious, but it does not mean that jade is always cold. Jade has good thermal conductivity and it heats up easily when it is close to heat.

16. Is water quality or color more important?

There is an industry saying that goes "look at the type first, then the color". Although there is a saying that if the color increases by one point, the price will increase tenfold, this is a comparison between the same species. If the species of the same color increases by one level, the price will probably increase more than tenfold.

So according to the market price, water quality should be ranked before color, but it depends on personal preference.
